Who here has an oil catch can installed?
Just curious as I don't recall reading about anyone having one in their F22. I'm on the fence about this mod but I'm leaning toward getting one. I've owned a Z3 and an E92 335i and never installed one but I'm thinking I might do it to this car. It looks like BMS and Mishimoto have OCC's available but are there any other reputable brands? I see a bunch of $100 generics out there.

The OCC might have been something to strongly consider in cars with the N54 motor, but the N55 and B58 haven't really demonstrated an issue with carbon buildup like the older DI motors did.

I’m running a Mishimoto OCC on my 2015 228. It does what they say it’ll do and removes a fair bit of glop from the intake.
I’d install it again. |

not really needed on these cars, the n54 needed it big time.
the air gets recirculated with the DV. you can replace with a BOV and it will let off into the air, you might notice a lil oil deposit around the area. The OEM DV will send this back through the engine, im at 45k miles and just changed all my sensors. Car looked fine after being tuned for so long. That being said, you don't need it in this car, having one won't hurt.

I just put one on because I plan on keeping the car 100+k miles and I got it brand new and have 17k miles currently. Originally no intent to keep it past 50k so didn't get an OCC until I decided on keeping it. It doesn't desperately need it but as a tuned turbo DI engine it definitely doesn't hurt and if anything will only help the longer I keep the car. Plus I got a BMS OCC for $75 so even more worth it. I'd go for it, even at retail price.

I've been running the BMS n20 catch can since I got the car and I check it every two weeks or so. It's never full, only a little oil at the bottom.

Thanks for the feedback. It seems the ones saying it's not needed are the ones who never had one before. If you're 3/4 at 3 months, it's something that I think is necessary for longevity.

Another reason for varied responses of course is 4 different motors in F22 / F23 cars and I'd suspect responses vary with which motor the person responding has experience with. That said, adding one to any of the motors certainly won't hurt, so if you feel the need, go for it.

I wouldn't waste my time or money on the N55. There are numerous threads on the BMW forums where people have had to remove their intake manifolds on older, higher mileage N55s to replace their oil filter housing/cooler gaskets and they noted that the valves looked fine.
Also, with the introduction of additional vacuum hoses and gaskets, you increase the changes for vacuum leaks. Lastly, cleaning of the intake valves on a direct injection motor is a certainty. Some DI motors, especially earlier ones, require more routine cleaning. For example, N54 motors need it about every 50K miles. The N55s are looking like they can go 100K+ before a cleaning. BMW improved the PCV system on the N55 and B58 to reduce the carbon buildup on the intake valves.
