Some questions on buying a new 5-series
I'm looking to buy a 530xi for my dad. I looked at buying off a lot, and there is no single 2019 available - why is that?
Also, with 2018 models, there is a 3500 incentive listed in the inventory search listing. Is this coming out of BMW AG or a dealer margin? Or, in other words, how much extra should a dealer be willing to discount on top of that? I'm trying to decide if I should order a 2019 or buy 2018 off a lot - what difference in discount should I expect? |

I ordered a 2019 540ix M sport (loaded) in Oct and got a 13% discount based on Dec incentives and Costco discount. I would expect the same or better on a 2018 or a 7-10% discount on 2019. You have to look carefully because a lot of 2018 options are standard for 2019. I got mine from BMW Sterling in VA. Ralf was my CA. Highly recommend.

Do you have an expected delivery? I ordered a very similar car, but with individual paint , trim and merino leather, on 10/31/18, and when tracking it see that it is still in exterior build. |

individual paint definitely slow it down I think. I ordered in early Nov and it's in NY/NJ port right now, so hopefully delivery in a few days...

He disclosed what I thought were two really interesting things: 1. Dealers love using BMW's money as much as we do as buyers, so they will always look for (legitimate) ways to capture manufacturer incentives. Moves more cars and doesn't touch their margin. Sometimes this does mean pushing buyers toward certain models or inventory cars, but they're happy to do it on orders, as well. 2. BMW manufacturer incentives seem to be less this year because he think they're projecting that they're already ahead of their competitors in total units sold. A big goal of the year-end stuff is to get unit numbers up (even at the expense of some profit), so that in the following year they can advertise things like "America's most popular X-sized luxury vehicle" or whatever. This is probably all old news and obvious to many folks here, but it was interesting conversation while we were just sitting around waiting for the F&I guy to finish up with another deal. And, the sale/numbers had been agreed to and put in writing weeks prior, so it's not like he had any reason to make stuff up. |

Individual paint will not slow it down. Dealer allocation is key. When dealer receives confirmation of individual color acceptance, they also receive a build week. What color did you get? I went with SMB, amazing color even dirty!

Based on fiddling around with VIN tools and looking at a bunch of cars right in sequence with my own, and based on what my CA and BMW Genius told me, it appears that this was the week they were doing Azurite Black at the paint shop. |

To be clear, I ordered way back in August. My car was built in early November as scheduled, and has already made its way across the Atlantic. It is currently sitting at the Performance Center waiting for me to come pick it up. IIRC, my car sat at Exterior Build for a couple days and then zoomed through to final assembly in less than a day. Not sure if that's actually how it went or just when everything got uploaded to the online system. Given the efficiency of that factory, I would not expect that they would have begun your car at all if the paint booth was not going to be ready for it at the appropriate stage. TL;DR - you should be right on track! The biggest wildcard now will be how long you have to wait at Bremerhaven for a ride to the US. |

Well slightly off topic I wonder how long does PC take.
the car landed on the 30th, dealer quoted 31st originally (super unlikely aggressive), now pushed to Jan 4th re check in with possible 7th as one of the early day for pick up (my is at NJ port and to be delivered to Manhattan dealer so transportation time should be almost none should just be working through whatever they do at PC and with holiday in mind) |

My dealer also threw in carbon fiber mirror caps and now I'm thinking about the carbon fiber diffuser but apparently they are unable to order it because my VIN doesn't show up in their system? Is there really s difference between the '18 and '19 diffuser for the 540xi MSport?

My car, west coast, was in and out of vpc in less than 1 day, then about 1 day to get scheduled on a truck, and then about an hour to get to the dealer. Dealer had the car prepped in less than 1 day. Car docked on dec 16, ready on dec 19, and i picked up on dec 20. |

My timing is a bit odd due to the holidays (Performance Center basically closes from the week before Christmas through the week after New Years), but my car was complete the first week of November, arrived in Brunswick the first week of December, and was released from VPC about a week later. I'm thinking that my car may have been deprioritized due to my scheduled delivery date. Due to the holiday schedule - it was basically parked until the 20th at which point it was sent to South Carolina to hang out in another parking lot closer to the Performance Center for the holidays. I will pick up on Jan 11 - my understanding is that Performance Center Deliveries resume on the 7th, but I wanted to take advantage of a Friday delivery to make it a weekend trip. |

so just spoke to my dealer, it's still in VPC/Custom (he is actually not sure if it's at the custom or VPC or couldn't be bothered to check). oh well, now even next Monday is looking optimistic, so much for priority 1 vehicle...

bummer. Hope you get through soon. I know from recent experience that these last few days are the hardest.
A bit off topic, but the past few posts reminded me that when flying, going through customs/passport control has been much faster (for me) on the west coast (SFO or LAX), while the same on the east coast (pick your airport) always took much longer. Maybe customs at the VPC follows the same trend? |
