Back to summer setup?
When are you cold-climate people that have dedicated winter tires switching back to the summer setup? I was going to do it last weekend but I saw snow flurries yesterday. Might wait a couple more weeks.

I think it depends on where you live. I typically run winter setup from mid December to mid March, but there have been exceptions... I'm about an hour north of Philly.

Gitta is 'bout half way between Montreal (me) and Miami (no winter tires ever).
So Gitta's time-line makes sense, for people who really are up North ( ) add two-three weeks minimum. |

Ah, the beauty of Pirelli P-zero all seasons with no need to compromise handling and ride and wear during the cold months.
Chicago area I'd go with the beginning of April. T |

Thanks for the responses. Same here - haven't experienced my 162s yet. I put my winters on the first week I got the car. I live in NY/NJ, so I'll probably switch out end of this month.

It's not just the bad weather but also the bad roads. Once the weather gets warmer they will fix some of the potholes so the longer you wait the less abuse on your summer wheels

Once temperatures look like they will remain above 4° C (for daily lows), I will switch.
Adhesion is significantly compromised below 4°.

I tried my 235/40-18s in the first snow. They did fine until slush built up. Then I started sliding through stop signs. Then I put my Blizzacks on.

I've been back on my runflats for 10 days now, and I'm just starting to remember what nasty propositions they really are!

The tires are 225/45/17 all around, not staggered in the E46 325i. I've had no problem getting around for the past 3 wintes with the all season Pirelli's. I drive accordingly when it snows, slow accel, brake early, check my speed, approach turns with caution. The roads get salted pretty quick. When the roads are cleared, which is usually within the same day, the roads are merely damp and cold. The all season tires work great as they are compounded to stick even when temps are much below freezing. I don't care for ABS and snow myself as that leads to much longer stopping distances. This happens in pretty much all ABS cars. My mom has a newer Altima that does not have ABS and it stops great in the winter. Sometimes ABS really ticks me off. It would be cool to be able to turn it off but leave the traction on. But, in the E46 you can't do it that way. The DSC, traction and ABS all have to be turned off together. I just drive more cautiously and be extra careful. T |

I changed back to my summer setup 2 weeks ago. Only 2 sub-40 degree days so far since then. No snow either.

We just had a foot of snow for the first day of spring. It'll be 50 degrees and raining this weekend. I can't wait any longer. I think I'll switch this weekend.

heres good info from the m3 moderator Id like to pass on for its noteworthy!
In principle, the summer tire compound starts getting hard and handling/braking effectiveness drops off around 10C to 7C. Conversely, winter tire compounds start getting soft, less effective and accelerated wear above 10C. I change summer/winter/summer tires based on average temps and weatherforecast. 10c = 50f converted
