Question Acoustic Glass - How much does it help?

So, thanks to you all on the forum here, I ordered the Acoustic Glass option for my G05 build.

I have been thinking about this for a while and I am wondering if adding an additional layer of film or tint on the rest of the windows would have any effect on outside noise or not.

What is it they add to make the acoustic glass? Is it just the front driver/passenger windows? I am all for anything that reduces outside road noice getting in!

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

I had it in my MKII Audi SQ5 and it made a huge difference. the glass is laminated and thicker so it helps reduce the noise from highway driving s good amount. The option is $150 here for the X5 and will be worth every penny

Is this covered by insurance if you ever have a broken window?

It should be, especially if you get the glass factory installed. I've never had an issue with OEM accessories not being covered, but I'm in the US

I'm going to assume the glass will be like windshield glass where you have 2 layers of glass with plastic sheet in between. It will break easier but not fall apart like tempered glass would. Heck I remember my old trailblazer ss had that glass on front doors. Thought it was odd for GM to offer it.

We don't have the acoustic side glass on our 40i and even without it the car is the quietest car we have ever owned by far. If I had known about the Acoustic Glass for $150 I probably would have just thrown it on the order for the heck of it...but with how quiet the car is without it, I certainly don't miss it!

And my understanding is it is only the front 2 side windows, not the rear. And the windshield is already acoustic glass on all X5s standard.

that's correct, it's only the front two windows but even then it does help out quite a bit. While not a necessity, I prefer to have more insulation than less because roads by me are awful

It would have to be miraculous for me to shell out the $1000 AUD ($725 USD) here in Oz.

I think the price difference is because of the windscreen. Acoustic windscreen seems to be standard in USA based on the above posts while it is not so in the UK and the Acoustic Glazing option costs £495 which will include the windscreen and windows.

Ah that would make sense.

No need to think about the additional $300 cost
