Opinion on Soft-Close Automatic Doors?
Trying to decide whether to get the full Executive Package or just order the pieces I want separately. Would like the heated/cooled cup holders but not sure about the Soft-close automatic doors. They seem like a solution to something that was never a problem and a new complication that can easily break. Did a quick search through a few of the subforums and couldn't find any reviews. Any opinions on them?

I have soft closing doors on my F15, and IMO, it's a waste of money. First, no one who rides in my car knows that I have them, so they close the doors as normal. Second, I forget that I have them and close the doors normally. I did not order them on my G05.

Ouch! Though soft close doors have been an option for years and don't recall hearing of anything like that before. I don't really care for that option, but want the heated/cooled cup holders, laser light, remote start, and rear shades, so at that point soft close doors is basically free in the package. Actually only way to get the heated/cooled cupholders is to get the package.

This is my frustration as well. I just don't understand BMW sometimes.

I'm thinking I gotta have the cooled cupholders, too, for cold water and Diet Coke in the car. Must-have. I don't drink hot liquids much, and when I do, it's not in the car. |

I have that on my f15 and like it. Ordered it again on the g05. Haven’t had any issues with it. I ordered the option separately because I didn’t want the other stuff in the package, especially cooled seats. I have that now it seems worthless and i don’t want perforated seats again

The way it works on my E70 - the individual closes the door with very little force - it clicks shut with about a centimeter gap. Then the soft close feature kicks in and “winds” the door in/closed the rest of the way. It's pretty hard to get any fingers in the slot and if you do, it senses the resistance and releases. If you close the door regularly.... wait for it.... it closes regularly/all the way. It’s a feature that works if you use it right and it works if you use it wrong. I like it. My garage is attached to my house and I can close my doors without that loud WHUMP. Sometimes I use it - sometimes I swing it shut normally. Where the feature really shines is - you never get that "door ajar" light/warning even though you think all the doors are closed (usually because an occupant didn't use enough force to shut the door). I ordered it on my G05 Last edited by lumpydog; 11-02-2018 at 10:44 AM.. |

From my trusty service advisor. He said they service a ton of soft close doors and they aren’t worth the trouble. I had them on one X5 when they were standard. Never figured out the point.

If they quit working and you don’t want to spend the money to get them fixed, is there any problem other than they just don’t soft close any longer? I.e. can you then just shut the doors as if you didn’t have the soft close?

Complete waste of money. We have one F15 with and one without it. The wife wanted it. You actually have to remember to not close the door for it do anything. Only time its useful is if a child forgets to close the door all the way.

Son was about 6 at the time and was super good at not closing the door all the way. It took like 2 years for them to learn not to slam the door too |

I have it on my F16 and like it. I see the other points as well. I noticed when I looked at a G05 that the doors felt lighter than my car. On my car I had to get the door frame seal replaced at the latch position on the drivers door. I contribute the failure of the seal from the door closer stressing the seal.

My wife has them on her q7 and says its one of the best options on the car. The only downside is whenever she gets into my old truck the door dosnt latch the first time since she is so used to just getting the door close and have it pull itself in. I find it interesting how varied peoples thoughts are on color and features. Thats what makes the world so interesting.

I love the option though and find myself forgetting to shut the doors all the way in my other cars after using this option for so long.

I absolutely love the soft close doors. It's incredibly satisfying to just lightly close the door on my X5 and have the car do the rest of the work, rather than slamming the door shut like I have to on my 3 series.

There are folks who find soft closing door amazing. But for me personally, I find it completely useless because when I close the door, by the time the door is close to the latch, it already gets enough momentum that it will latch on properly. Now to use the soft closing door, I need to intentionally slow it down to let the software does its job. This slowing down action is against my intuition to close a door.
As far as cold/warm cup holder is concerned, it may disappoint OP as well. I read somewhere the heating/cooling element is only at the bottom surface. So if you have a cup with a lip at the bottom, it will not work so well because the contact area is just too small. EDIT: Just realize this is a really old posting. Oh, well..... |

Sometimes these old post help the newbies....
Must have option for me for a $70k+ vehicle. It’s like adaptive cruise control. Some don’t use it but most wouldn’t buy a car without it. The very definition of “luxury” is giving you more than you need. Last edited by MystroX5; 11-19-2020 at 06:28 AM.. |
