X3 M40i vs X5 40i
Wondering if anyone is considering the X3 M40i over the X5 40i. I understand this is a total apples to oranges comparison. There is a huge performance difference between the two, and I'm curious to see if that is enough to move someone from the X5 to the X3, regardless of the other obvious differences.

If it's only performance that makes a difference, then why not go X3 M40i? I think its a pretty obvious answer if nothing else makes a difference. I think by the virtue that we're looking at the X5, that we're either looking for a larger SAV or that the 4.0i is good enough. For me, I'm leaning towards the X5 for the size needed. The X3 is just too small to use for hauling camping gear for the family.
If I were to replace my M3, I'd move to the X3M as I don't need the extra space and cost of the X5 Msport or X5M.

Same boat as you. I need the larger SUV. Plus, while the X3 sounded and handled great, I was not MOVED. I felt it was pretty boring on the inside. Plus, it felt like a car. I prefer the feel of an SUV. |

I was almost decided to buy X3 M40i. But after last visit in local dealer X3 occurred to be too small for me and I bought X5 40i Msport- I have 2 children and space in X3 is the same like in my wife's Audi A4 Allroad. I was afraid that I would regret this decision.
But not only space pushed me to change decision: - very small difference in price (sth like 5%) - better materials in X5 - X5 belongs to new line in BMW - I think that X3 is going to receive new interior after facelift - better proportions of the car Of course X3 gives you much more fun (also easier to park in the city), but I hope that the difference is not going to be huge (almoust same engine with m exhaust, but unfortunately also lack of m sport differential). |

X3 was significantly facelifted for MY18. In August, I had a fully-negotiated and sealed deal on the only Silver over Black X3M40i in the country with the Driver Assist pack, 300 miles away. Wife came home next day from work and announced she thought we needed something larger (even though the X3 has class-leading cargo volume), and that started us on our G05 journey.
I concur with other poster: would have been happy with the X3. I am ecstatic with the G05. Happiness vs Ecstacy. Hmmm...

I looked at the X3M40i after I ordered the X5. I had always thought the X3 to be small and unimpressive - this was before the facelift, etc. But the X3M40i was amazing and sounded even more amazing.
CA convinced me to stay with the X5 - upgraded technology, larger to hold the family and their gear, and price was close.

I test drove the X3 M40i and i really loved how sporty it was and how quick it accelerated. Great power! But I am 6'3" and 220lbs so i don't really fit in it too well. Even with the seat all the way down and the steering wheel all the way up, I felt really crowded in the drivers seat. When I sat in the X5, it just felt right.
Now, I really wish we had that M40i motor in our G05's, but I am hoping I can get closer with some tuning if it comes out! (that was the one thing i felt was lacking when I drove the F15: power delivery) Regardless, I am very excited about my G05 order and I can't wait to get it!! |

My Co-worker just got an X3m40 and I drove it. It's really fast and handles great especially for an SUV. The question is what are you looking for? A sporty car ride you can store a lot in or an more cushy SUV ride? The X5 seems more luxury orientated (more more sporty than other luxury sub's) and the x3 more sporty. I have a Z4 for sporty driving, looking something to feel like the sunny center of the universe while stuck in traffic. And with a higher quality level.
I'm guessing Dinan will come out with a software update that will make it similar or higher hp than the X3m40. |

As much as I like the G01 X3 M40i looks compared to the G05 X5 40i, I am still leaning toward the G05 X5 more.
It is bigger, more space, and newer tech. The later is the most important, otherwise I'll get bored with it soon. As I am with my '17 G30 540, it is barely 2 years old and it felt old already after seeing all the new bells and whistles. Power wise, it can be taken care of with a few mods like what I did on my G30 540.

For approximately 0.7 secs slower 0-60 than the X3 M40i, you get luxury and performance in addition to the latest technologies and suspension options - 2-axle air, off-road package, laser lights, next gen. interior design.
I've considered and driven the X3 M40i - the performance is intoxicating but I'm in my X5 just under 2 hours, commuting 50+ miles a day. It's hard to give up the interior refinements and especially multi-contour seating just to zoom zoom faster. Though the X3M/X4M might convince me otherwise

There always a way, just matter on how crazy are you going to do. FBO are, piggyback tune, catless or high flow downpipe, turbo upgrade. Those should be plenty for daily drive SUV and will make if more fun to drive.

Well the Dinan upgrade for the 2018 X5 3.5 brings it up to 360hp/392 torque. So I would expect something similar.

Imho there is a very clear upgrade in interior quality and a slight downgrade in performance (due to added height and weight) when going from x3 35m to x5 40i. I for one cannot live with the x3 or 3 series interior after spending last 5 years on 5 series and x5.

Test drove the X3 M40i and liked the power but in the end it would have been like buying a newer, more powerful version of my current F25 X3. The looks of the new G01 just didn't convince me.... Now, for about 5% more cost, I am getting a whole different vehicle (G05 - luxury, comfort, tech, looks!!!)

I have a new X3 and a 2016 F15. The X3 has DHP and its a joy to drive. I cringe every time I have to drive the F15. I'm hoping the drive of the new X5 with DHP is nearly as good.

I have a X3 M40i and love it. I will probably consider the X5 40i M Sport next year. The X3 M40i is raw and sporty with the X5 being more mature and luxurious.
