L-shaped tail lights have been a BMW trademark since the 90s.
7-series E32 for example, the E46, E92, 6-series F06 to name a few and many others.
The G20 ones are just an evolution of the L-shape into a more contemporary 3D-like design which is in tune with BMWs current style language.

It's been a BMW style forever. The "L" is even animated on the GTS's OLED taillights.

Yes, that was my first thought.

To say the old rear lights were L shaped is a stretch. No one ever said in the past that BMW's rear lights were L shaped. Never. In this case, the light itself shaped like a variation of the Nike Swoop design - which was what people were criticizing Lexus about and now BMW is copying.

Fresh, original thought. This is absolutely the first time I've heard this rear-end Lexus comparison

BMW did come out with the L shape design many many years ago.

However, it has evolved more so since the E6x generation.

But on this G20, its a blatant copy of the Lexus IS

No, there were threads yesterday and renders done months ago of the vehicle that were near spot on to the actual car. The Lexus comparison has been discussed ad nauseum

No way. BMW has been using L-style tail lights.
There are differences and BMW rocks

Is the 2019 BMW 3 series rear too close to the Lexus IS?

What do you guys think? at first glance it does look like it was inspired by the Lexus IS but surely that isn't the reality!

BMW designers would be crazy to be that bold and lazy

Absolutely.... I can't stop thinking the same thing in my head. Totally derivative of the IS, and the front fascia looks like it could be at home on a Nissan.

In general, the G20 is just way "too fast, too furious"-looking, if you catch my drift....

Yes. I think the G20 looks horribly Lexus like in a lot of ways. A real shark jump for me.

Are you serious right now? BMW have been known for the L taillights since the E32 era, the 90s!! Where have you been?

They even tweeted about it - https://twitter.com/bmw/status/63366...388033?lang=en

This is a silly argument really. As others have stated, BMW has been using L-shaped rear light clusters since 1986, the theme evolving over the years.

Lexus, on the other hand, uses L-shaped themes in their design on not only their rear light clusters, but their front light clusters as well. The idea being, I suspect, to continue the theme used in their logo, i.e. the "L" in the Lexus badge.

Both featuring L-shaped themes in their rear-lights can be made down to coincidence, but BMW copying Lexus is preposterous. Look closer at those light clusters. If you still think BMW copied Lexus, then fair enough I guess. I'm just not seeing it personally, apart from both the G20 and Lexus (RC in this case) having an "L" theme:

Except for the Predator mask fascia, I find Lexus IS quite attractive. BMW's taillights have always been L for a long long time. It may not be noticeable by general folks but it's their distinctive design like the Hoffmeister kink.
I rather it not drive like a Lexus (looking at you f30!).

Obviously someone has made a YouTube video to discuss a total unrelated matter.
In 2009 BMW introduced the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept Car that introduced a new interpretation of the BMW L shape light as a prominent and three dimensional unit.

This started to feature on BMW cars from 2013 as did it start to be interpreted by Lexus.
The purpose of Concept cars is to interpret iconic elements differently and stand as concepts for technology, innovation and design that will filter on to today's models. Just as we see now.

Reconfiguring your design icons provide a fresher language of design innovation.

I see similarly styled taillights and a trunk.

If anyone did any copying, and they did, in my opinion, it was Lexus copying BMW’s iconic L shape. The current iteration of BMW’s design may lead the uninitiated to believe it is a copy of Lexus, but, as is common with the Japanese, Lexus started the copying. In particular the beginning of Lexus’ copying began with the previous F01/02 7 Series and the previous generation of the Lexus LS.
