Failing Thermostat/WP
Hi everyone,
I'm getting error codes for my thermostat. Just wanted to see how urgent it is to replace it. When I clear the code (2EF4) it pops back up in about a week or so. I also get the occasional 2AAF code with it. 2008 E90 N54 w/117k miles. Original WP and Thermostat to my knowledge. Any advice? Thanks in advance |

Only a matter of time before it completely fails, and it will inevitably fail. Better off getting it replaced ASAP when it's convenient for you, otherwise you'll find yourself stranded on the side of the road in the very near future.

As soon as possible! I had a failing water pump on the way home from work. Transmission overheated and went into limp mode. Luckily I was only a mile from home. Once it fails, it fails completely. I believe I paid $380 for the WP/Thermostat kit on FCPEuro

My water pump gave me no notice and failed a couple weeks ago. Luckily, I was able to limp home but had to have it done because I had too many things going on to DIY. I'd do the water pump and thermostat asap unless you want to get stranded.

But what if there is not water pump related code, and only thermostat code? My WP failed 2 years ago (about 40k miles ago) and threw only WP related codes (2E81 and 2E82). My WP was changed but not my thermostat (I know, idiotic. I didnt know any better at the time and the shop didnt tell me to do it.) Now today I am intermittently getting 2EF4 (thermostat) but fan is running full speed at all times , but no water pump codes. Did WP bleed/test and the WP is working fine. what if the thermostat is failing but WP is still good?

Maybe not warranted, but I'd be concerned about the fan running full tilt at all times and want to replace whatever was necessary to keep it from doing so. Those fans are rather costly.
