I missed my calling in life

I feel I should of got into a trade or something because I spent the day making this today for my kindling for the log burner and absolutely loved it. Coming from a tradesman family (dads a heating engineer, grandad a carpenter and granpop a plumber) and going into IT seemed a good idea at the time but maybe I should try and make more stuff out of wood.

Anyone else wish they did something else to what they do for a day job?

Very good, you spent a day doing it I reckon I'd give you a tenner for it...not a great hourly rate there, where are your dovetails!?

Stick to IT it'll pay way better.

I had a load of stuff like that after my house extension, couldn’t give it away for firewood.

As above stick to the day job.

Harsh Feedback!

Good start, something different - also IT people need a hobby otherwise they just talk and think about it 24/7....

Not knocking the effort just pointing out the financial benefits of staying in his current role.

Well I like it, but then I like my oak CD rack and my pallet coffee table. Just wait until OneExtra sees it though...

When it was snowing last, we couldn't find a sledge so I knocked one up in 10 mins out of old bed slats and other bits of pallets I had left over, it worked really well!

Personally, I think that the growth of IT has put a lot of people together that 30 years ago would have been in completely different spheres of life.

In 20 years or so on this side of the fence (any budding carpenters care to build one) I have met a huge number of people that I cannot imagine having the wherewithal and people skills to survive on the business side of any business. Without IT they would have extremely mundane low paying roles.

Then there are the bullshitters who would have made their way up the greasy pole in any modern business. Not great at IT, but great at managing up and convincing others of their ability.

Somewhere in between are talented and flexible people who would have done well anywhere.

Because of all of that, many of us (especially 40 somethings) probably feel that we could/should be doing something else.

Ha thanks guys knew I could count on your support. Definitely won't be giving up the day job and was a bit of fun for my and kept me out of trouble for a few hours.

I've made various shelves from old planks which wasn't hard just cut to size and sand ALOT to get all the years of crap off them.

I've got a horrible prefab garage with a pebble dash Render on it which maybe my next summer project cladding all that.

I say well done!

I think it's good to have a completely different hobby, to ones work, and if it's something you really enjoy then perhaps it's better that it's just a hobby, where you get to make whatever you like?

Plenty have found that a sure fire way to stop enjoying something is to turn in to a profession. I know a couple of folk who went fully professional at poker... hated it and one was back in her old jobs 6 months later and back to enjoying poker as a hobby they made money from in the side.

My father in law, can make anything he needs out of stuff he's got kicking around, he's like a geriatric MacGyver! Some of it looks a bit shit, but the skill is incredible.

Get a Gas poker, you don't need to fuck about with kindling then. You can then also burn that box you made.
