Digital display key in package or 1-off option?

Hi All,

My CA wasn't clear on which package(s) the digital display key would be bundled with. I don't believe it's standard. For what it's worth, I'm in US, and I know BMW redefines options/packages by country and region. Any insight into US market /digital key availability would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Is this where you use your phone to unlock and start the car?

Here is a good video of it:

I think it is a bit unnecessary personally. I never take my keys out of my pocket and the thing is HUGE. So I don't have any need for it. I also don't think you can attach it to a standard key chain...just too bulky.

Thanks for the info. Well, I think we still get a regular key fob, I think we also get some kind of card with NFC that can be used as a key. I have an iphone, and I've heard the NFC chip in the iphone isn't open for developers--even BMW. That's what I've read. Others hear the same?

Yep, we definitely get the standard BMW key fob. There is no "Card" they give you in addition to the fob though. Like you mentioned there will the option of unlocking the vehicle using NFC in a phone...currently only available for Android phones. However, there might be some good news on the horizon for iPhones. iOS 12 which comes out this week is supposed to open up the NFC chip for developer use! So my guess is iPhone support will be coming soon to the X5.

Anyone heard of any updates to this? iOS 12 has been out for a while

That’s really the point of what BMW has enabled. You never take your key out with the new X5 so a display key is counterproductive.

I have a nice alcantara flip cover on mine and never really have to even open it.

BMW NA just confirmed to me an hour ago that the Display Key is not yet available for the X5 and didn't say if/when it would be for the US.
iOS 12 did open NFC for developers and I did see a video recently where it showed a person bringing their smart phone to the door handle and unlocking it...just don't remember if it was in the US, UK or elsewhere. That said, I wrote BMW NA back and asked about the iPhone's capabilities with the X5. Will report back when I know.

Will do.

I'm also hopeful that one day I won't need to carry the key fob. However, there's no feel good substitute for having the metal key with you in case your phones battery dies, the phone dies, the electronics in either the car or phone flakes out, etc, etc, etc.

I guess you can always use one of those tiny tin key holders that magnetically attach to the under frame of the car. You can remove the metal key from the fob and put it in the holder...real high tech!
