How do you sell/represent used turbos?
Just installed some GC Lites and have a set of turbos off my 09 335i with 67k miles. Mechanic said the turbos look good - I had some deteriorated vacuum lines(bought the braided factory like ones for ECS, the got brittle after one year, FYI) that we’re causing all sorts of obvious issues that had me wanting to just go all in on new turbos. The rear turbo was replaced by BMW 10k miles ago, less than 2 years. The front developed some wg rattle and I had my mechanic shim the actuator with a couple washers where the mounting bracket meets the turbo, and nearly all the rattle went away.. I had no intentions of replacing the turbos anytime soon, but kept running into random boost leaks(inlets, outlets, diverted valves) and finally said F it and bought some GC Lites, turbosmart plumback DVs and misc things to to restore a troublefree turbo car. These turbos are at my mechanics shop in Orange County. I see that blown cores are worth $150 in tradein/wholesale value for the pair, and anywhere from $250-$500 for a single “used in good working order” turbo as seen on eBay. I’d like to play it safe with this sale, as the front turbo should be partially rebuilt - at least new wastegate flappers, but who really does a partial rebuild of a used turbo?? Seems like a cheapskate roll of the dice. Unless.. there is a foolproof way of inspecting a turbo for wear without having to flow test it. I should probably call Pure Turbos as they aren’t far from me. Anyways, as you can tell I’m looking to sell my pair of turbos and want to make a troublefree transparent sale to a member here. Suggestions? Offers? This is the only pic I have, sent by my mechanic after removal. |
