What will the next 3-series look like?
I know this is a little early, but still, what are people's opinions. Will it have an older look, less Bangle, or a more modern, japanese look? Hybrid? Sorry if I angered anyone, if anybodys pissed off that this thread wastes their time.

BMW is going to use a "whole new design language" for the next generation of cars. So after this generation finishes itself out (with the 3 series coupe) then expect to see some radical new showcar (like the Z9) that will show off a new design direction to get an idea for the next gen 3 series..

Given BMW's history of design "evolution alternating with revolution" from one generation to the next, the next gen 3-series should be a simple evolution, since the E90 is a revolution from the E46.

if you notice the design trend of bmw, ther is a progression of design cues from the bmw family.the E39 bmw took some design cues from the old 7 series. the facelifted e46 saloon front aped a bit of the X5 front. the e90 front end and interior has taken some design cues from current 1 series. the next 3 series design will be revealed in another bmw released within 2 years from the e90 replacement. mercs also follow this hereditary design, S class and C class (-baby s class)

BMW typically follows a 7 year design life. But around year 3 there will probably be some facelift changes to freshen the design and generate new interest, etc.
Although they probably already have people making sketches for the next generation concepts, seven years is a long time. They will do what everyone does and watch the trends, consumer reaction to different types of design elements, etc. BMW really led the charge in the current generation of cars, and hopefully they will do so again in six or seven years... I would look for the 7 Series to be the first tip off of the new direction when it comes.

I love it! It cleverly combines the luxury of a 5 with the sporty appeal of a 3! Oh, hold on a sec.

Like sex. Planning and preparation begin very early on. And BMW are not known to be influenced by any outer entity. Like the others said the new 7 will be a glimpse of things to come.

The current 5- and 7- series featured some radical departures in styling that were not universally received well. BMW seemed to take this seriously in consideration when it designed the new 3, because it stood to lose a substantial loyal following.
I agree with Mark as he describes the "whole new design language." The current X3, 3-, 5-, 7-, Z4 all share similar design cues, which depart from the previous generation of BMWs. However, they all still pay respect to BMW design trademarks as well. It's a fine balance of bringing in the new with cutting-edge, innovative styling, yet maintaining the tradition and brand recognition that BMWs inspire. |

Mark was quoting Adrian Van Hoodwink ( ) in an interview about BMW 's design. So it is what it is in terms of a statement.
However, note that BMW alternates historically between (relatively) drastic design changes and evolutionary changes and the e90 counts in BMWs books as a drastic design change. If the new Spychops of the 7 series are an indication (see Autobild) the lines will soften somewhat and be taughter, more aerodynamic-the cars will be knockouts |

Whoever designed that mutant BMW poured so much time and money into it that they could have bought a new one instead.
