Break In Oil Change.

Pick up an M240i xdrive less than a month ago. I have had 4 Subaru's in the past 10 years. I have been changing my own oil for the past years on all my previous cars and all my family members cars. All M vehicles come with the 1200 mile break in service but our cars aren't considered M vehicles. I will be prob putting about 10-12k miles a year on this car. So I will be getting one oil change a year if I go with the dealers recommendation. So to cut to the point.

Since I'm new to BMW, what did everyone do regarding the break in oil change and which intervals do you guys recommend? What oil do these bad boys like, filter recommendations. I will do some research but have been crazy busy with work. Car is a daily driver and will prob not see a track for a while. I already have a Dinan CBE installed, and will only go as far as an intake and Dinan Stage 1 within the next few months. Thanx in advance

At roughly 1200 miles the car notified me that I need an oil service, drove the car in, they changed the oil. At 6K, I was getting tires put on, and the dealer said, they would also be doing the oil, and the other day the car notified me that I am due for oil service in 2200 miles (was at ~7800), ...... oil changes are free, so I am going with that, the dealer/computer

never had any notifications regarding service when I surpassed 1200 miles, only notification it gave me is how many miles left until the 10k service. I did end up changing the oil at 5k just to be safe.

service is based on the CBS computer .... if you drive really hard it will usually say 6-7k miles if you drive it easy it would show 11-12k miles...

just use the BMW oil and filter....

I would take the free oil change every year from the dealer and do 1 in between every time... every 5-6k miles

I did one at ~1200mi.
And then exactly what pikcachu recommends. I ask them to use 5w40 if they have it, 5w30 if they don't.

I changed the oil and filter at 1200 miles. Sent the oil sample to Blackstone labs. Report said it'd take 5000 miles for all of the engine assembly materials to wash out. I put LiquiMoly 5w30 Liqui Moly 2011 Top Tec 4200 oil in the engine. It meets the BMW LL01FE standard. FYI: all B58 engines, with the exception of those sold in the US, use 0w/5w30 oil. Why? Economy standards.

Mike Miller at CCA recommends an initial change at 1200 miles... but Marco, interested in your comment from Blackstone. So they said it'd take 5,000 miles to flush out...meaning it's not worth the 1,200 mile change, or it's worth doing that one plus another at 5,000?

I was thinking of using Liquimoly 5w40 from fcpeuro but it was brought to my attention that it's NOACK is almost 10% which is not the best for intake valves...

Pensoil Platinum or BMW oil are below 7% ... just a thought..

Precisely. The lab said that it usually takes 5k miles for all of the assembly lubes, etc., to be fully flushed. I've changed the oil again, and sent the sample to the lab. The car had 4300 miles (and 4 track days!!) on the oil. No mention of assembly lubes in the second report.

5W40 is too thick for the B58. The stuff at the dealer is a 0W20! The engine is filled with 0w30 for all markets except the US.

I run 5W40 Amsoil in my 240i. It's fine and analysis shows no adverse effects. Oil change interval was @ 1500 miles for the first change and every 5000 since.

The owners manual calls for a 0w20 or 0w30 Longlife-01 FE or Longlife-14 FE+ oil. Obviously the engine is engineered to work with these oil grades. In winter a 5xXX oil will be quite a bit more viscous than a 0wXX oil, likely leading to more cold start wear for an engine designed with tighter bearing tolerances and smaller oil passages used with 0w20 and 0w30 oils. I wouldn't expect any adverse effects to show up for at least 100,000km, but not using an oil that meets BMW specs will obviously lead to a voided warranty if the engine has an oil related failure.

Not sure why you think 5W40 is the wrong oil - quoting directly from the owners manual.

Viscosity grades for engine oils
When selecting an engine oil, ensure that
the engine oil belongs to one of the viscosity
grades SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40,
and SAE 5W-30 or malfunctions or engine
damage may occur.◀
The engine oil quality is critical for the life of
the engine.

With the M240i, that is the statement for adding up to 1 litre/quart when the correct 0w20/0w30 oil is not available (BMW Longlife-01 FE and BMW Longlife-14 FE+ oil specs only allow 0w20 and 0w30 oils):
