New remanufactured starter failed?

I replaced my starter yesterday on 2007
328i and it started perfectly the 1st try,
but would not start the 2nd time. I can hear the click in the engine when attempting to start it and I have all lights & the battery is good. The starter is reman from NAPA. Any ideas?
UPDATE: I had my wife sit inside the car to start it and I used a bar to tap on the starter as she was attempting to start....The car starts every time as long as I'm tapping on the starter. Would this indicate a bad starter?

Tapping on the starter to make it work tends to indicate a bad solenoid on the starter that is sticking. The tapping is enough to jar the solenoid to make the 'relay' in the solenoid un-stick and move to allow the battery current to get to the starter. The other way to test the solenoid is to connect the contacts across the back with a screwdriver (or other conductor). If this also makes the starter spin, the solenoid is definately not working.

Please make sure you are doing this starting test with a really good battery, preferably on a charger during the test. Low voltage starting can seem like a bad starter.

It is also possible there is a bad spot on the commutator insider the starter, and it will not spin if it ends in a specific position.

I would check again with a known good battery and after that return the starter.

Your rebuilt starter included a solenoid, so yes the rebuilt starter is bad. Take it back.
Thanks....going for the Bosch this time

Good move....

Get a new Bosch. There's not much $ between the remanufactured price & new price.

Piece of mind really.

Yeah I never understood "saving a few" on parts like that. That job is a PITA and its not like the difference is hundreds.

Same goes for suspension parts, Lemfoerder or bust.

I have the remanded Bosch, I hope they improved the design to last longer as they normally don't last that long. Mine failed at 110,000km.

Yeah, guess i should say OEM (meaning original equipment manufacturer, not BMW branded) or bust. Find whomever actually made the part for BMW and just buy it from them at 70% the cost of what it would be for the same part with a BMW logo on it.

While they are slow to ship and sometimes too expensive Pelican is really handy for that, they list like 5 makers and point out which one is the OEM.

I agree. Pelican probably has the biggest selection of parts by different manufacturers for the same part.

ECS tuning & FCP Euro also do that, but they don't have quite as many selections to choose from. ECS has more than FCP though, but I like FCP's lifetime warranty.

I like to get the OE (original manufacturer) part, as some parts sellers interpret OEM as meaning “if the manufacturer made ANY original part for the car”. It’s a sneaky way to make a crappy part sound original.

Had this happen too, so annoying, and to do the work twice. Agree on Bosh, and then picked mine up from Turner and perfect ever since. I normally never shortcut but fell for the convenience factor and lost!

I just replaced the starter in my 09 E90 335i and the original starter was a Denso. I replaced it with a new Bosch starter. Comparing them side by side, the solenoid on the Bosch was much larger than the one on the Denso.
