I think chances are it will come with a choice between a manual or an SMG, like before. I could even see it only coming with an SMG (not likely, but I wouldn't be surprised), like the M5.

Manual & DCT (dual clutch transimission).

They are testing SMG III and DCT - BMW are very impressed by their new DCT performance, so it has very good chance to be featured in the new M3.

How does that work exactly? (DCT and SMG III) From the drivers POV.

I was told the ZSG/DCT cannot handle the power of the M engine without being made very heavy, thus //M's would probably stay with SMG or Manuals unless the transmission manufacturers could solve the weght problem

To change gears : On //M cars you have paddels on he steering wheel, on "normal" cars you have buttons on the steering wheel

e90Fleet is right (as ususal). I read in Autobild (very knowledgeable German mag) that the ZSG for now cannot handle the torque of the M-line of engines, including the v8. So it looks like at launch the M3 will get the manual and the SMG III (seven speedo like the M5). At the same time the M5 will get the manual tranny available.

BMW would love to get the ZSG dual clutch into the M cars because it is (it would appear) a much better tranny.

WARNING SPECULATION: since Audi had the same issue 3 years ago when they first introduced their DSG, an issue now solved by Audi, since their S and RS lines all carry the new-gen DSG, I think BMW will solve it as well (i.e. get the license rights from Borg Warner or Getrag-not sure which does the actual design on these suckers).

Old news.

Getrag (the same company that developed SMG transmissions) & BMW have developed a super compact 7-speed DCT gearbox - model DCT 436.

It can handle upt to 600Nm of torque - e.g. 5.0L V10 from M5/6 has max torque output of 520Nm, and 6.0 V12 from 760i max torque of 600Nm).

So, this gearbox handles new V8 in M3 with ease.

The princip is the same. You can choose various automatic or manual shifing modes. Shifting with stick or steering wheel paddles.

So from driver's POV the only difference is that DCT can shift faster & smoother than SMG - which is pre-DCT solution.

DCT is much better technical solution than SMG.

I don't care if it'll be manual or not but I can't wait for it to come out. There is some asshole out here with a GTO that keeps fucking with me.

Can't wait to eat his ass up.

i heard it's going to be a hybrid with 1-speed variable transmission

anyway, i also assume it's going to be some kind of SMG box but i also hope for manuals. USA is supposed to get M5s with 6 speed manual, or not?

I doubt the new M3 will allow you to "eat his ass up", but at least you should be able to keep up just fine on the highway. You may even be able to slowly pull away from him and would definitely be able to pull away at speeds over 120mph. That is, of course, unless he has done some modifications to the GTO.
