If You Ride A Bike.

On Thursday last week my wife's 16 year old cousin was tragically killed in an accident involving his beloved Aprilla RS50, a tractor towing overhanging bales of hay, and a 70 year old woman with her 90 year old mother.

It happened less than a mile away from his home.
On top of this his father was 7 or 8 cars behind him in traffic and it happened in front of him.

He had only just finished his secondary school exams and had his prom the previous week.
He was going to have a summer of fun before starting college.

Since the age of 6 he had been riding quad bikes and dirt bikes on private land owned by his family.
He was a very competent rider. He knew what he was doing and made it look easy.
He was better on bikes than I am.

We visited the scene and spoke with an elderly couple that live directly in front of where it happened. They witnessed the whole thing.
They told us what had happened in great detail.

It didn't involve speed, it didn't involve any one doing anything they should not have been.
It was simply a tragic accident.
There was nothing that could have been done by anyone involved to avoid it.

I have spent the last 4 days between London and there.
I am physically and emotionally drained just from witnessing the effect on his family. I can not fathom what they must be going through inside.

His family are broken.

I would not wish what I have witnessed in these last few days on my worst enemy.

The aftermath of these things can be just as devastating as the event itself.

I have not been on a bike in about 3 years and now I don't think I ever will again.

Guys, if you ride bikes be careful out there.
Sometimes shit just happens.

My cousin broke his neck in a divng accident just before his 21st birthday - I was 11 at the time. I spent many weeks visiting him in a spinal unit in Sheffield - most of the other patients were victims of motorcycle accidents, often pillion. I have never wanted a motorcycle since.

Condolences to the family - tragic when one is taken so young.

Sorry to hear it. I've always been into bikes but it is exactly things like this that have scared my wife into scaring me.

Really, really sad for all involved.

Sorry to hear about it, agreed it's a nightmare situation.

My daughter works in Atherstone and commutes out to near Hinckley.

Up until last year she was riding her bike but I was very worried about this type of thing happening I bought her a car and sort of persuaded her no more bikes.

Motorbikes are one of the biggest killers in the forces, a good mate (same training courses etc) went home to Norwich from Cosford at a weekend, I chatted to him on the Friday, Sunday he was dead, a head on with a lorry in wrong lane.

Condolences to the family, as mentioned it makes it all the more worse when so young.

Indeed terrible situation, I'm always looking for bikes when I pull out especially at the moment with strong sunlight and some rural roads with over hanging trees creates a dappled road so you've got to be observant I'd hate to make a mistake and ruin mine and families life.

Lets all take care out there.

I'm really sorry for you and your families loss.

16 is no age.
