When does wear and tear cross over and become a warranty issue?

Hi all,

I've just noticed some fairly shocking wear to the leather bolster of my drivers seat. Excuse the poor quality of the picture, but it was taken using my mobile phone.

Now, I know I wear jeans or combats most days which may accelerate wear over, say, suit trousers, but I wouldn't have expected such wear (the leather is actually beginning to 'peel') after 9months/less than 19k miles.

I'm not dissillusioned to the point where I would expect the interior to still be looking as new after 3 years/60k miles, but I would have expected something more durable than where I currently find myself.

So, my questions are:
Is anyone else experiencing wear of this nature? and
Do I have grounds to have this looked at under warranty, or is this a true wear and tear item?

Thanks in advance,

Si

The leather in my E90 was still in tip top condition after 23k and I only wear jeans and combats... Doesn't sound like wear and tear to me, particularly after only 19k - claim under warranty mate

My wife's 120d showed the same signs of wear as this after 2 years (30K) and the dealer replaced this section without question. They did a great job and it matched perfectly.

Just had mine replaced under warranty, premature wear was the statement from the tech, caused by the seatbelt rubbing on the leather everytime you put it on, also gets scutched when you get in and out if your not carefull...had to change the way i get in and out of the car now ie ass in first the twist and sit, crap really, but works. I gave the seats a quick clean with saddle soap, then into the dealership, stating ' i keep the seats cleaned/saddle soaped every 6 weeks, you can check them if you want, but it has still worn on the bolster...blah blah etc etc..' He said no problem, we'll replace under warranty also got the drivers interior door pull/handle changed as well, seeing as that had started to blister.

Mine looks exactly the same - I also wear jeans most of the time

Have started to get in the car now differently so as not to make it worse!

Let me know how you get on with regards to warranty - I may make the same claim myself shortly

My leather has started to wear exactly as pictured above after only 3 months. Got two stealers to agree it's premature and it's now booked in for the whole leather seat back to be replaced. Let's hope its done to a good standard.

Its normally just a cover they remove and replace by pulling over the seat foam, so should be an excellent match... I had something similar done on my VW Bora.

I had 2 E46s wear the same way and I expect my E93 will do the same. It's the design of the sports seats, it's very hard not to rub against the bolster when getting in the car, especially if you have the seat in a sensible driving position, ie where you arms are bent whilst driving. It's a design issue and therefore warranty.
