Investing in a diagnostic tool is a small price to equip yourself with more knowledge prior to going to the dealer. Glad you are getting it.

They're as easy to use as a PC. Watch all the youtube videos about them while waiting for yours to arrive and you'll be way ahead on the learning curve.

I recommend the Foxwell NT510, because it can clear codes. Most cheap readers can't do that, so even if you fix the problem you might not be able to clear the code, so you'd still have to go to the dealer or indy.

I can't say if that works well. I recommend the Foxwell because I know it works very well.

Recommend you verify with the Vendor or the manufacturer to confirm the VGATE ICar fully supports your car with all the functions they list. I know their Amazon ad say they support all diesels since 2003. Some of these scanning tools will only support some functions on specific cars, but since they do that, the ads read they support that line of cars (just not fully).

I purchased Schwaben tool from Turner Motorsports. If I am not making a mistake, Foxwell and Schwaben are practically identical.

I recently purchased the Schwaben unit myself. It’s made by Foxwell, but the Schwaben branded unit comes loaded with bmw specific software, not sure about the Foxwell version.

The Foxwell doesn't come loaded with software, you download it and install it yourself. It's a simple procedure, the PITA is that the documentation that comes with it is almost indecipherable about not only how to do it but even that you need to do it. Luckily there are youtube videos that show you how.
