DIY Wheel/Tire Install - ok?

So, when my 19" CSL Reps come shipped to my front door, any reason why I wouldn't put them on myself? It seems most everyone goes to a tireshop for the install.

I've got jack+stands+torque wrench in my home 'shop'. Have changed my brake pads and bled brake lines, etc. a few times before. Am I missing something here? What's the big deal about pulling off the stock 162's and bolting on the new 19's? (can the alignment really get whacked by just changing out the wheels?)

(BTW, what's the torque spec on the lugs? Is this rim specific? I'm used to the 76-81 ft.lb range.)

Hehe, If you've changed brake pads before and messed around with other things, then you are more than qualified to wrench on your own car! Who goes to the tireshop for installs? I mean for mounting new tires, but to bolt on new wheels?

No big deal, the alignment cannot be "whacked" by changing a rim.
Torque spec is 87 or 88 lbs. I believe, could be wrong. The specs are not rim specific.

Changing the wheels yourself shouldn't be much of a problem. Although, I had a tire shop install my winter wheel set. It wasn't that I couldn't do it, but I just don't have the space. I had them shipped to the installer from Tire Rack.

My car is parked the garage of my building. There is no space for me to use a jack and start changing out wheels. My only other option would be to take my car to one of the nearby shopping malls and change the wheels in the back of the parking lot (which would look ridiculous).

Comedy. Someone would probably call the cops thinking you were stealing wheels. Nothing wrong with a shop doing the install if you don't have the space. That makes complete sense - just want to be sure I'm not missing something here (I've been known to do some fairly dumb things in my time).

I went because I needed to have tires mounted, and I just had the tire shop put on the 162's.

Ive been looking at a few sets of 19's, and if they come with tires, I will certainly put them on myself. If your not in a position where you have to have tires mounted, then go ahead and do it yourself... Probably one of the easiest DIY's...

Yea, I forgot about people with no space. My comment assumed (like donkey jewels) that people have the space. Even then, some people may choose to have a shop do it because they don't want to get soiled-up. Sorry for coming across wrong I just thought of all the peope who changed flats who are the average people with no "extra" interest in cars like us here on e90post.

I did it myself, just use a piece of wood in the plastic and it should be fine...

There was another tread in this forum regarding the torque, here it is:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=torque+wrench

I think the torque setting is 130nm = about 95ft lb. Check the tread above.

I get it tight, and then give it another 1/4 turn.

Mounted and balanced. I dont think you can get tires mounted without having them balanced. Its sold as a package more or less....
