do you know who the previous owner was?
If it was a young male than you can probably assume it was. Do you know if there were any other mods on the car?

Look at all the connectors that a plug an play tune like the jb4 would be plugged into typically these connectors are almost never touched if they all look like someone was poking around you can assume something was done. I have seen this on a couple cars. Either the wiring harness cover has been undone or broken clips on the connectors these are usually telltale signs. Also what others have suggested.
