Worn shocks; can't complete alignment
Had car at BMW for alignment. I was told the front struts are worn, and they areunable to complete the front alignment. Also said they couldn't do the rear alignment because of seized bolts. I was charged for the alignment anyways (labor time to mount the car to the machine is still labor time I suppose).
I asked for the before and after printout. Adviser told me they only had the before sheet since they were unable to do any adjustments. I have new tie rod ends on the front, could the toe have been adjusted or would worn struts prevent that as well? Front Toe 0.16' (Red) 0.03' (Green) Thanks! |

As I understand if parts are worn to the point where things move around, then they cannot align. It is like shifting sand. But raised my eyebrows when they could not even adjust toe because of worn struts? Did not even want to try?
Which BMW dealer if I may ask? But sucks they charge you. Maybe have a word with service manager and see if you can get some of it back. They sure did not spend the full time needed, Find a good alignment shop (depending on equipment and tech) offering life time alignment. Firestone is one. |

How many miles? Worn shocks? I mean the real issue is usually worn bushings and mounts probably.
Are the shocks leaking? Are they blown? With cars in the north east, rust and seized bolts are a real issue, especially with alignments. |

Thanks for the replies.
Park Ave BMW. My thoughts were the same regarding at least fixing the toe, considering I have newer tie rods. 95,000 miles, worn struts per dealer so they could not do alignment. Not sure if they are leaking, will need to check this weekend. I thought shocks would be a camber adjustment, and tie rods would be a toe adjustment. New tie rods and thrust arms less than 5,000 miles ago. Alignment print out attached as well. |
