Open active shutters while parked

On my 530e, the active shutter in the front grill has been open for a week. Does anyone know if this is expected? I thought they were only supposed to be opened when I'm driving, not when parked in my garage.

No. But I wish I could code mine to stay open. I think the front looks more sporty with an open grill.

I wonder if the actuator is broken or if something is jamming the shutters open, although you would have thought it would throw an error.

Have you check the fuse for the shutters.

Sorry my post is not of help.

Just called the dealer and they just told me to bring it in to have it looked at. We will see what they have to say.

I have a May 2017 build 540XI M-Sport. Last summer my grill shutters remained closed except in extreme summer heat. This year they remained open beginning in April. Thought there was a problem. Took it in for service and they ordered a new set of shutters. Still open.

Also noticed my air conditioning system is blowing colder this summer. Had a major software update earlier in the year. Just wondering if it also included keeping the shutters opened longer to allow more air to enter the front grill? Seems more air would mean more efficient air system.

Our weather is just starting to get to 100+ degree days. I am playing golf Saturday. I will try to remember to check the grill to see if it is open or closed when I return to the car.

Mine shut after I have been driving, even in 100+ days.

I imagine there will likely be a TSB for this at some point. Mine did the same; they never closed (they worked fine originally) -- even if the car was not driven for a week. I took it in for an oil change and some other items, they attempted a software update but ultimately none of the shutters were responding. They replaced them all, now pretty much once the engine is off they close. They do have some logic though, based on speed temperature etc as to when to be open or not, but if the car is off they should close pretty quickly.

Just curious - why? Aside from keeping the engine warm for optimal fuel efficiency, they also help with aerodynamics.

More sporty look?

A closed grill suggests to me a low powered engine. Where as a grill/front end with lots of openings is a sign of a high powered engine that needs lots of cooling. Take a look at the new M5...

Just my 2 cents and personal taste.

I was playing around with some ideas. And I haven't decided to put them back.
I kind of liking it with open grill though.

My car had an alarm sensor replaced earlier in the year and the software was updated at the same time. My grills stay open longer also and I have noticed that the air con is much better. It is 24 degrees here today and with the temperature set at 20c the car is nearly too cold.

You're right. Every picture I see of the M5 shows an open grill. I actually like the open look, so will wait and see what happens when winter rolls around again.

Eh. Interesting viewpoint; can't say that I've ever had that correlation.. *looks at the Model S 0-60* time

Did you remove the lower ones as well?

I don't think the M5 actually has it, just browsed around on realoem.com and I don't see any air flaps for the front bumper.

Nope, I only remove the kidney grill.

F90 M5 doesn't have active grill at all.

For those who have had the car looked at for this issue. Did your CEL throw any errors? My service advisor mentioned that if the shutters had a problem, it would throw the check engine light.

Thanks in advance.

No notifications or faults. Shutters just remained opened. I will see if they close when winter rolls around to NE Ohio.

Another update, my service advisor called and let me know that they had ordered some new parts. They didn't indicate what the parts were, but my guess would be new active shutters.

Until then, I can continue to enjoy driving the loaner 330e.

No warnings; it just stops working.

Lol what? That’s ironic considering closed would mean lower drag coefficient. There are so many ways that can take in air when needed n now with so many cars with battery tech it makes even less sense.

Personality I think closed looks better vs seeing the white filter. If anything I wish my car didn’t delete the blue accented active shutters. There are plenty of super cars with little to no vents right in front

Ha ofcourse fair enough but i do wish they'd make dark filters so you cant see right through and see the white inside. They photoshop that out in the ads for a reason. PS love your 5 series wagon/ avant, i dont think we get those here!
