Want to paint my window trim : Need some guidance
So I'm looking to save the $1k bucks on buying the black window trim and am willing to sand it down and paint it myself. Anyone have any advice on what to use to sand it down and a specific type of paint to paint it with. I've looked for the DIY cause I thought I saw one somewhere before, but had no luck... Any advice is appreciated and I'll be sure to post up the DIY as I do it...

My 2 cents: if you want matte black trim (not gloss, aka shadowline), just buy it new. It will pop right in and look brand new. Not sure what E9x your driving, but it cost less than $300 from Tischer, and the install is not too difficult.

Your talking the actual trim, not an overlay?

Yes, the actual trim. 6 pieces, front sills, rear sills, and over windows strip. I may be able to find the part #'s for an E90 if you really want them.

Here are the part numbers for the matte black exterior window trim, and the prices at the time I purchased (Feb '08):
51137117243 Left 93.00 51137117244 Right 93.00 51337060235 Front Window Left 18.44 51137060236 Front Window Right 18.44 51347060249 Rear Window Left 31.08 51357060250 Rear Window Right 31.08 That was everything needed as new fasteners came with the parts. The only tricky part was pulling back (don't remove) the front door panels to remove the rear view mirrors bolts. Mirrors have to be removed to get front trim underneath. Way less of a headache than removing trim and sanding and painting. |

I you have an E92, just contact Jason at Tischer, jreighard@mileone.com, and he'll hook you up with the E92 part numbers.

Isnt Brandon's an overlay? I already have a vinyl overlay on but from the amount I wash the car, they're fading fast....

Definitely man! It just gave me a better peace of mind, because i knew that if it didnt turn out perfect or started chipping in the following weeks, i could take it back and get them to fix it at no cost. Also, the pain is taping up the entire car (well most of it) because removal of the e92 trim is not possible without damaging it.
Us e92 owners have 3 options 1: Vinly trim overlay (Brandons pre-cuts or custom) 2: OEM shadowline 3: Custom Painted (freedom of ANY color choice -matte/glossy/color matched) |
