N53 fuel filter

Hi

Someone on here mentioned a while ago that the N53 doesn't have an inline filter for fuel between the LPFP and the HPFP. I looked at realoem for my car (F10) and notice that the LPFP is the same on the n55 engined cars even sharing same pipework and those do have a fuel filter. The filter itself is shared with n52 and n20 engines.

Does anyone know why the filter would be omitted on n53 engine cars? It can't be because of the LPFP because that part is shared with n55 engines and those do have a filter. Can't think of any reason tbh.

Considering fitting one as it seems crazy not to have one, unless there is a good reason it's been omitted.

Thanks
Mike

This is interesting. Can you post a link to the RealOEM page so we can see where they locate the filter on the F10 and how it's mounted?

F10 n53 fuel feed showing no filter:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=16_0774

F10 n55 fuel feed showing in line filter:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=16_0776

I need to get underneath mine and take a look to see if the filter is present or not. I read on here the n53 doesn't have a filter. Looking at n55 and n53 f10 fuel feed diagrams it's not clear if the tank to filter line is common between the two and if they are, what is in place of the filter on the n53 pipework if no filter. I am on a mobile at the moment so is a bit tricky to figure out.

Oh I see you have a 5-series. I suspect there may be more room under the floorpan to mount a filter than there is on my 3-series. Difficult to tell as the whole underside is shrouded in plastic panels!

I also note there is an extra fuel return line fitted to the F10 with a filter, so it won't just be a simple matter of attaching a filter, new fuel lines will be required.

Yes new fuel line will be required for the return.

Either way I'm more interested in why the n53 doesn't get a filter. It's can't be due to restricting the flow from the LPFP or anything like that.

Perhaps compare your e9x car with an n55 version and see if those have a filter. I'll have a look later.

Don't worry I looked into this ages ago and I don't have a fuel filter. I assumed it was a cost saving measure as I understand all previous 3-series were fitted with filters.

I don't think I will be trying a retrofit as it looks from your RealOEM pics that a new tank will probably be required to allow the additional return line to be plumbed in...

Given the pressure the HPFP and injectors run at it seems crazy not to have a filter though. Perhaps this is why the injectors were/are so unreliable. Diesel engines run at similar pressures and they always use filters AFAIK.

Apparently the N53 engined cars have a 'for life' filter in the fuel tank.

It obviously wasn't successful or they wouldn't have returned to using one on the later N55 engined cars.

Yes, when I said I don't have a filter, I meat an in-line one. There is a strainer in the tank as you say...
