Pre-Lci Fender Issue?
Just saw this on instagram
Guy was running 666 wheels with a 265/285 tire and H&R springs. A rear fender made contact with and subsequently cut a tire while he was driving, and caused him to crash and total his car. Nearly killed him in the process. OP says his car (early MY '17) had unrolled rear fenders and these cut the tire under load. My '17 has rolled fenders so I'm not sure how legit these claims are but I'd go take a peek at your fenders and make sure they're rolled regardless. I think this is not an "issue" per se. A lot of cars out there have factory unrolled fenders.
Anytime we modify a car we are taking a risk. A stock car goes through all these testing to make sure in all situations the car performs correctly and safely. When a car is modified from stock, that testing is compromised. What he did was put an overly large diameter wheel paired with lowering springs. The car was not designed to have 20 inch wheels and that ride height. If that car was taken to the track even once, where the suspension compression would be pushed to it's limit, it would've been very obvious that this spring/wheel/tire set was not suitable for the car. The rubbing will be unbearable and the car would perform badly. The lesson here really is, when modding, don't sacrifice function and safety over looks, which a lot of people seem to do. If you do, just be prepared to take the responsibility when something happens. |

Hmm, is he sure about this? mine is a March 16 build and my metal guards are rolled from factory, the comparison pics are pointing 2 different directions of the rear arch, the left unrolled one is showing rearwards and is the plastic rear bumper, which is not sharp or strong enough to cut a tire.

It doesn't seem like he or anyone else knows what specific M2's could be affected by this, if it's a model year issue or a region issue. All he said was that his MY 17 didn't have the rolled rear fenders but his MY 18 that replaced it did. It was the first thing he checked after taking delivery of the new car. He seemed very certain so I'm taking his word on that. If you have any questions I would directly message him on instagram and ask. I don't have all the answers, I'm just passing the message along. |

I did post on his Instagram stating the pic was of the rear plastic bumper not the metal guard but he's now blocked me. I wasn't trying to imply he wasn't legit, just trying to clarify what part of the guard apparently cut the tire.

That cut doesn’t follow the rotation of the tire, and the leading edge of it (based on the direction the tire normally travels) is half way into the first tread block, meaning the fender would have had to meet the tire at a point that seems unlikely with the car traveling in a forward direction. The cut in the tire looks to me more like an effect than a cause.
Regardless, I just checked the rear fenders on my ‘17 and they are rolled. |

I don’t believe this story at all lol...
The pictures are two completely different areas. One shows the metal fender, the other shows the plastic bumper. Just look at the angle and height of the two photos, both are completely different. If the one that’s supposedly not rolled was taken a little higher you’d see that the metal fender was indeed rolled, he took a picture of the plastic bumper lmfao. The left photo is the REAR PLASTIC BUMPER, the right photo is the FRONT METAL FENDER. Both photos taken from the passenger side of the car, both facing towards the rear of the car. Everyone with an M2 can recreate these photos and they’ll see that both photos refer to TWO DIFFERENT PARTS! This dude is dumb as hell, look at the photo on the left do you see the fastener? Go to your M2, look at your rear wheel and you’ll see the fastener is present ONLY next to the PLASTIC BUMPER! If anyone believes this story...smh. Clearly he was driving fast as well. Anyways, I got a 2017 M2 and the fenders are rolled! Anyone commenting that claims theirs isn’t rolled, perhaps they’re mistaken and think the plastic bumper should be rolled too lol. Unless someone here can show a non-rolled metal fender. Fraud much? Last edited by NO_USER_; 04-06-2018 at 07:14 PM.. |

Or else you’ll have misinformed owners wasting BMW’s dealerships time. Also adding to the “legitimacy” of this dudes claim...which is clearly false. Anyone with Instagram should post on his photos with these facts. Hopefully insurance and the authorities see through these false claims. Last edited by NO_USER_; 04-06-2018 at 07:10 PM.. |

This guy was driving way too fast, piled is car up and is looking for excuses. His story makes no sense at all. In the instagram/twitter world crap like this turns into fact simply because someone posted it.

Not sure if it's related to this story or not but recently when I had my wheels off the car I noticed that there is in fact a piece of metal in the rear wheel wells of my '17. I'm lowered quite a bit and have 15mm spacers on the car so there is some rubbing going on under certain circumstances. Just to be safe I ended up shaving the area down with an angle grinder. Just thought I should share for awareness.

AndrewC1989 you need to also include your tire setup and alignment settings as this will aid others if they should investigate if the mount needs to be trimmed.
But yes you are correct that area should be reviewed depending on setup

Stock wheels/tires sizes. Not sure what my camber is set at. If I had to guess I'd say I'd at or near the maximum settings the stock suspension components will allow.
