what would YOU do?

Magellan Maestro 4250 w/ free 1 year traffic subscription = $359
Garmin Nuvi 760 w/ no free traffic subscription ($80/yr) = $359

in my area the traffic subscription suck but in Boston it might be different. I would go with NUVI its a much better NAV system.

If traffic is important to you, consider the Navigon 7100. $350 (from Amazon) and free traffic FOR LIFE.

OTOH, there's so much change going on with navigation right now (e.g., Dash) that you may get a new unit every 18 months just to take advantage of new features.

I have had units from both manufacturers. My current is the Nuvi 660. What I liked about the Magellan was the ability to delete a street from the route. I'm in Toronto/Montreal once a month. There are certain times of the day I have no desire to be on the 401.

UUUGGH!!!

This is getting rediculous. I have been researching GPS for two months now - and still have not pulled the trigger! I have read hundreds of reviews, and talked with many GPS users and it comes down to the Magellan 4250 v the Garmin Nuvi 760 mentioned above.

Primary reasons for getting a GPS are bluetooth functionality & traffic updates. I will only use for true navigation about once a month.

Regarding bluetooth, there have been an equal amount of reviews about the speaker loudness being too soft for each unit. So the jury is out on this one. But what the F are you gonna do?

It appears that I can get the Magellan for 250. And the Garmin will be 350. If all signs point to "both have a couple flaws, but are good GPS systems" - all other things being equal, wouldnt you try the Magellan for $100 less?

Too Late?

May be too late but ...I'd go with BMW's own built in nav system. Yeah, it's lots of money but it comes with real-time traffic and it's a lot more accurate and faster than third party nav's out there. Not to mention that there are no installation and "too much glare in daylight" issues and ... you can play a DVD on its screen when the car is not being driven (2008 models only, I hear)

Cheers to that - a BMW nav would have been nice. Could not justify the $2100 price tag though. Decided to save $1800 and go with an aftermarket.
