Question What color are the style 224 wheels on the M?

I curbed one of the rear wheels on my Z4M coupe and I'm going to have it refinished next week. The guy asked me if the wheel was silver or hyper silver. I told him it was just the standard OEM silver, but I've started thinking that I'm not even sure of the difference between "plain" silver and hyper silver.

Does anyone know if the style 224 wheels from the Z4M are silver or hyper silver?

I think hyper finishes refer to a shiny finish, but that's just a stab in the dark.

It's not hyper-silver. If you look at the e46 M3 wheels (18's), those are hyper-silver finish.

///Metak is correct, "hyper" silver isn't truly a single color as best as I know, but more of a marketing term for dark but shiny silver. Picture a reflective gray, almost a gunmetal type of silver.

Just tell them you've got good old OEM "regular" silver.

I don't think there's really a specific term for the color. It all depends on marketing and each company call a certain color a different name. BBS has the Diamond Black finish. CSL reps have the hyper-black. I've heard of hyper-dark, hyper-silver being called by different companies and different people as well. Of course, they don't all have the same shade.

In this case, the Z4M's wheels' finish is definitely slightly shinier and darker and less of "plain silver" compared to the regular Z4's wheels, but at the same time not as dark as the E39 M5's wheels.

Thanks for the info/comments everyone. I dropped of the wheel to my refinishing guy on Monday. I received a call from him this afternoon that he is having trouble matching the paint. As GP20 mentioned, it's not the "standard" BMW silver and everything he's tried hasn't been a suitable match. He even went out and bought a relatively "exotic" paint that was something like $70/pint and that didn't match to his satisfaction.

He's going to try and talk to a rep from another paint supplier on Monday and see if he can find a match.

Does anyone know the name of the manufacturer for the style 224 wheel? The wheel is made in the US, and I thought I saw on the National Geographic Ultimate Factories episode that they were located near the Spartanburg factory. It's a longshot, but any information I can find to help with identifying the paint is appreciated.

Not sure who makes the Style 224 wheels. BBS makes a lot of OEM wheels for BMW. If it was BBS, you could pretty much bet they wouldn't disclose the paint code.

How much is the guy charging you to refinish the wheel? Locally I know it costs about $100 per wheel. But I've heard some places charge $200 or more per wheels. A brand new style 224 rear wheel is only $381. If I were you, I'd probably just get a new one and not have to deal with the hassles and headache.

Most North America bound Z4MC Style 224 wheels are embossed "SII" on the inside of the spoke and are manufactured by Superior Industries, Inc. http://www.supind.com/index.html headquartered in California with plants in Arkansas, Kansas, and Mexico.
Recently my local BMW dealer agreed to replace a defective wheel under warranty. As there was no inventory in the US the new wheel was shipped in from BMW AG. The new wheel is manufactured by Austria Alu-Guss http://www.aluguss.com/ , a subsidiary of Borbet.

Update. My wheel refinishing guy wasn't able to match the paint to his satisfaction, so after a week and a half of trying, he gave me the wheel back while he continues working on a solution. He said he'll keep the workorder open and give me a call after he contacts a few more of his paint suppliers and they mix up something that meets his standards.

Jim, Thanks for the manufacturer information. I relayed it to my wheel guy and he was going to try and call them to see if he could get a paint code or something.

GP20, He was going to charge me between $175 and $200 for a complete refinish. A new wheel is going to be about $420 when I throw in shipping. I'm in no rush and at this point it's a matter of pride for him to match the paint and get it done right, and I'm willing to support his effort.

Powder Coat wheel color

Bavarian Autosport carries a touch-up paint for wheels which might include the color number? All of the silver powder coated wheels are painted the same color of silver what ever the actual factory# is. It is not the same color as the Titanium Siver Color.
