WiFi in F90

Can someone explain how the WiFi in the car works?

Is it just free and can anyone in the car connect to it? Throughput speed? Service provider? How configurable is it?

I believe it is free for the first month (or 3). After that you need to set up a contract with a provider.

Connection is configured in the iDrive and requires a password.

It comes with 3gb and 3 months. Used it up in 2 days setting things up. Have a chromecast hooked to the rear entertainment and can stream ESPN, Netflix, etc. It is an AT&T hotspot and can be linked into your data plan if you have service for $10/mo or can be setup separate/stand alone with unlimited data for $20/mo.

8 devices allowed at a time. Streams very well.

If you had the car in your possession you would simply connect your device to the hotspot then your phone will redirect you to the ATT website, you just create an account with att online or use an exsisting account then the trial begins.

Finally made this work. It's underwhelming. When you do this have an extra device in the car. When it redirects you to att and it sends you an authentication code - look it up on your second device and keep your current att screen open. If you use one device, then close your browser to check your email for the code, when you reopen your browser it will not have saved where you are and you can't get back to it. I tried to do this with BMW Genius and he couldn't figure it out, lol.

Thanks for the heads up! Thats sound advice.

Glad to hear it uses AT&T, as I have an account with them.

Honestly I see no benefit to WiFi in car. Not like anyone is going to have a device that needs WiFi except for kids with tablets.

B I N G O.

Yes, my kids use it in the Q7 and did in my A8L. I let them have iPods and iPads but no IPHONE yet (they are too young) so we let them have internet access but not unlimited and unsupervised. LOL.

And if I use my lap top I can access the web when I travel without having to buy another device.

I know others have pocket WiFi hotspots which are better than the speed of the car systems, but still I find the in car system useful.

I like having it in case I want to leave early on a Friday for a quick weekend roadtrip. With the wifi, we can leave early to beat traffic, and I can continue working while my wife drives.

I was messing with the Wifi and Hotspot today. As described above I was directed to ATT site to create an account. Perhaps tomorrow I will look into it more. Was very different on our Audi's (was actually much easier on the Audi).

We will make use of it....

edited....LOL

I got it working, had to call BMW to get the car's mobile number.

I got 10 Mbps down and 3 Mbps upload. That's not bad.

Our q7 has T-mobile and it's 3g. Slow..

Do you have an iPhone? If so, what made you go this route over using your iPhone as a hotspot? I use it all the time when I'm on my laptop and its no different connecting to it versus any other wifi hotspot. Genuinely curious

I have unlimited internet on my iPhones (grandfathered in with AT&T) so if I use the hotspot function I loose the unlimited. With three iPhones in the family the data charges would add up fast! LOL

I'll just buy time on the car's hotspot when we travel. Can buy it in increments.

Was just trying to log into my ATT account to add some time and I could not. And when I looked at the list of in car services offered by ATT, BMW is no longer listed? What????

Does the wifi device shut down when you turn off the engine?

I have Blackvue dash cams on my car and I am thinking if I can use the cloud function to send notification to my phone real time.

Good question. It must shut down, I hope.

But as far as a Dash Cam is concerned the car has all the hardware built in to do that and can send images to a server, just BMW has not allowed such a function! It would be ideal.
