Flash Tune Question - DINAN to MHD

Straight to the point, do I have to remove my Dinan Flash FIRST before flashing to MHD? Or could I just overwrite Dinan and flash MHD.

For reference my car came with a Dinan Stage 2 tune and since then I've added JB4. I want the benefits of MHD and JB4 working together which brings me to my question. If anyone can chime in that'd be great.

IF I'm correct, you'd want to remove Dinan tune first for 2 reasons that I know of.

1. to avoid any flashing issues
2. you may lose your stock map file if you go straight from Dinan to MHD w/o flashing back to stock first.

My thoughts

Very good points, I will spend the extra money just to be safe.

I would be careful going back to stock depending on the year of your car and if you have the MEVD from 2012 or 2013.

If you flash it back to stock, you probably will need to unlock it to then flash it to MHD, which is a huge hassle and costs $$. I assume Dinan has some special deal with BMW as you don't need a separate unlock with Dinan for that DME. So you might be able to go from Dinan to MHD without dealing with the unlock issue.

I was told by MHD to not flash my DME back to stock, or I will have to unlock the DME again by taking it out and physically unlocking it again.

Dinan has their own RSA key - so they dont need to hack around the encryption like everyone else. Just a perk of their status with BMW as an OE tuner.

But the Dinan tunes are going to be extremely basic compared to MHD - and if you want to use MHD, whether you have a Dinan tune or not is irrelevant. You will have to do an initial flash anyway.

Dinan is not modifying the boot or program code in any way; flashing to stock makes no difference. You should be able to just get it flashed by MHD without doing anything else.

The Dinan tune is a sunk cost - water under the bridge. I wouldn't use it as a basis for further mods.

I agree, good thing I didn't pay for it.

Hmm.. I wasn't aware of this 'unlocking'. I hope someone here that has gone from Dinan to MHD can shed some light on this process.

Dinan doesnt "unlock" anything. They have the nessesary information to sign their tune which works with the stock, unmodified DME.

Another way to put it is a Dinan flash is not already unlocked. You have to unlock it anyway.

Thank you for clarifying, I was told by somebody else that once Dinan was installed I could replace it with MHD without an unlock - sounds like I was told incorrect info.

I thought Dinan had to get into the DME the same way everybody else does, I didnt realize they had a special deal with BMW.
