Hi,

I have had my BMW 320i 2010 (67k) for few months and it has recently brought up the EML light. I have had someone take it off and its come back again after driving a few miles. The error codes are: 2AF8 - Nitrogen Oxide Sensor deceleration check - intermittent
2AF0 - Nitrogen Oxide Sensor, heat - intermittent.

These are the codes that are showing on the computer but in terms of performance it seems fine maybe eating more fuel but as i haven't had it for long i can't be sure. I haven't experienced any other issues.

Can someone advise on the next step it seems to indicate issue with Nox sensor. Do you think i should buy the NOX sensor and get an independent garage to fit or would i be better of going to the dealers to run the diagnostics and confirming the error they are getting and then going to an independent garage to carry out the work. Are these error messages only related to the NOX sensor or could it be anything else. I am currently still driving my car 75miles a week is this going to be make it worse?

Any advise assistance would be appreciated as it looks like the sensor alone is worth over £300. This being my first BMW am not sure how i should move forward so if anyones had something similar that would help. I will continue to look through more posts online on this subject also.

If you've had it less than 6 months pressure the supplying dealer to fix it for you. Assuming you bought it from a dealer.

Check out NOXEM it's an emulator that supposedly works better than the OEM one.

It's strange as NOx errors don't normally illuminate the EML - codes will be stored and engine will happily run in homogeneous mode all the time, meaning it'll just be using a bit more fuel than before.

Are you sure there were no other codes stored?

No - no other codes showing. Bought it privately so can't take it back either. Having googled NOXEM it looks like you have to do alot of configuring to set it up which isn't something i would be comfortable with as i can get by but wouldn't say am an advance user in car diagnostic tools etc.

I good BMW specialist would be able to do the configuration for NOXEM - not much more involved that what you have to do when fitting an NOx sensor anyway. If you plan to keep the car, I'd go the NOXEM route - wish I had when I replaced my NOx sensor 18 months ago on our 330i

Thanks - not aware of any BMW specialists around South Yorkshire Sheffield. If anyone has any suggestions would be happy to look into getting it done.

I apologise for adding to this thread but I also have a NOX sensor issue.

I have a 2009 (59) 325i SE automatic and my Engine management light came on last week when accelerating from 40 to 60mph. The car became sluggish and juddered when driving less than 5mph or reversing. Presume it is in protective/limp mode.
Car by the way has done 110,000 miles.

I have extended the warranty (full comprehensive).

Interestingly I took it to an independent BMW specialist as BMW are funny about warranties when cars have exceeded 100,000 miles.

He stated that there was an issue with the ignition coils, sparkplugs and fault code on the NOX sensor.
He felt that the error on the NOX sensor was likely due to the car engine misfire, etc.

Anyway, I called BMW to see if any of this is covered under my warranty.
To my surprise - that said yes (apart from the plugs). I did get them to repeat twice!

They did their own diagnosis and stated that the Fuel injectors, coils, plugs and NOX sensor need replacing.

They have replaced the Fuel injectors, coils and plugs.

**Now here is the issue**
The NOX sensor is apparently fused to the exhaust and they cant remove it.

They now are saying that they have to remove the exhaust.
BUT at my cost!!!! As the exhaust is not covered by the extended warranty.
I am disputing this as I feel it is their issue.

Am I being reasonable in challenging them in this?

Some questions:
1) Is there any harm in driving with a faulty NOX sensor?
I know it uses more fuel possibly.
But my MOT was 2 months ago and passed the emissions tests.
Will the NOX sensor fault cause the Engine light to illuminate and cause the car to go into limp mode?

2) Do you think the NOX sensor gave an error due to the engine misfire?
I am trying to clarify with BMW if they have tested the NOX sensor after replacement of the injectors/coils/plugs and resetting of the fault codes.

3) If I do have to pay for the exhaust replacement - does the whole exhaust system need replacing. Or does it come in segments and only the portion that communicates with the NOX sensor need replacing.
I am sure BMW will insist on changing the whole damn thing.

4) How much does it cost to replace an exhaust - bog standard parts and estimated BMW labour?
I just want to get an idea to see how much they want to rip me off!


I am looking to buy a new car in March 2019 - so don't want to plough loads of money into this car.
But it does need to run and be reliable given my job/work/travel.
Hoping to get the 2019 330i M Sport.

Bear in mind that I am useless as a mechanic - so please assume I cannot do any of this work myself.

I would like any works not to invalidate the warranty.
