Smoke after coil pack change
This is highly odd..
Car: 2005 E90 330i Manual 150k Timeline of events: - Misfire, constant - OBD2 Reader says cylinder 6 - I swap cylinder 6 coil with cylinder 2 - Clear errors - Start-up, this time error is recorded against cylinder 2.. So I deduce it's a faulty coil pack So I order a new coil pack 4 days later.. - I come to open the car with my key fob and it's totally dead.. So I have to unlock manually - I put new coil in cylinder 2 - I hook up jump leads against my other car - Car starts, sounds back to normal (i.e. no misfire) - After about 30 seconds I notice Smoke coming from what I would describe as underneath cylinder 6. So I shut the car off. I'm no smoke expert, but I would say burnt rubber over burnt oil. Anyone heard any stories like this? |

Leaky vcg allowing oil into the spark plug well? When you changed the coil you disturbed the oil?
Oil getting into a coil pack can also cause it to misfire. Get a torch and have a look down there for oil. |

Good shout
Looks like oil coming from rocker cover. Battery and coil pack perhaps unrelated. Drove the car to the garage with the AA. It sounded much much more tappety on the drive to the garage. This is the first time I've driven the car without it's engine cover, so I'm hoping it's just that. However with other cars I've had the engine makes little difference... |

Update:
The smoke, coil pack and battery all appear to be unrelated issues which occurred at the same time. The smoke was a leaky rocker cover. The coil pack was a duff coil pack The battery was dead - probably weather related The car is back with me now. It cost around 400 to get sorted. I've not had the car for two weeks, so have been driving round in a Civic and new Octavia. The Octavia is really nice, and despite feeling like id gone back in time when getting back into the 330i, I rejoiced at the hydraulic steering, sporty feel (lowered too!) and lovely motor. They just don't make them like this anymore! |
