Sounds exactly like auto-hold, but not sure if that should shift into park for you: http://www.bavarianmw.com/guide-2506.html

May have something to do with your parking brake?

I was going to say the same thing. Is this happening while parked on a hill/uneven parking surface?

If you're going to do your own work you need a code reader, like the Foxwell NT510. Without one you can't identify faults.

Check your transmission fluid and see if it's low. You may need to drain and fill, but don't flush it. If not that, check your battery and parking brake actuator.

I doubt that, it's as if he tried shifting without a foot on the brake. If the shift controller isn't getting the message that the brake is depressed that would explain it. Which of the myriad of sensors is responsible for that who knows. It would take a code reader to trace it.

I only say that because the guy in the video he linked successfully solved his problem by doing that. Not saying it's it, but it's a possibility. A code reader would help though.

FWIW I have been told by the dealer and a few BMW Techs, that "These are sealed lifetime transmissions. You can't drain and fill (I asked for them to do it as preventative maintenance) and if you could or did, you would void the warranty." And also "Do not touch the transmission unless it is acting up (more than a simple CEL code)"

The same tech told me that the Drivetrain/Transmission Malfunction was due to the battery age and not being able to correctly operate the start/stop function...

00 11 500 Checking/topping up oil level in automatic transmission (GA8HP45Z,GA8HP70Z,GA8HP90Z)

That was just a condition for that transmission.

It's not impossible, and with a six year old car a new battery isn't a bad idea. But I wouldn't pay dealer prices for a battery. You just need to have it registered, and any shop that regularly works on BMW can do that.

Hmmm, So I guess the dealer and tech are full of it. I am at 80 k right now. I would definitely like to start doing drain and fills every other couple engine oil changes, as preventative maintenance.

I have been doing this on my old Acura since 150k and I am at 210k now with no issues. But that car is so simple, it would be stupid not to. Just remove drain plug, wipe clean, reinsert drain plug and the pour 3 quarts in through the dip stick. It only adds 5 minutes to a typical engine oil change. The acura transmission system holds about 9 quarts total, so a few 3 quart changes back to back and then a every other few engine oil changes gets the fluid in good shape and keeps it that way.

Changing the ATF is a PITA, but by no means impossible. IMO changing the fluid without changing the filter is a waste, which means dropping the pan, perhaps even replacing the pan, so I wouldn't be inclined to do this at less than 60k mile intervals.

Yeah that sounds fair enough, being that you are changing the pan/filter/gasket/fluid etc....

To say the least, yes. They have to follow what BMW tells them, just like the timing chain guide issue. If it can be done for preventative maintenance, then I agree it should be done.

dear friends,
now i am back after 7 months, with same problem again.(will not shift into reverse or drive, goes back to P) first of all thank you all for suggestions.
I have to inform there is no error code listing after malfunction.Secondly i found that this problem accours only in winter time.
third: i found a solution,if i step on the gas 2-3 times over 3000 rpm, then i can shift again, till next morning all the day without failure.
any suggestions?

Yeah, there has to be something wrong here. Maybe a calibration issue or a sensor. It seems the car won't shift when the transmission fluid is dead cold.
