What are performance differences between 30i and M40i besides engine

Can someone explain to me what differences there are in the M40i over the 30i relating to performance (not trim or decor). Suspension, Steering, Transmission.

If you have read some of my posts, i'm looking to replace a 2011 F25 35i - with Sport Package and Dynamic Handling which game me the sport transmission, Variable sport steering and a beefed up suspension.

I was looking to replace my 35i with a 30i, but I just don't know if I will be happy with a step down. I was hoping to enjoy the lower price, higher mpg, and lower maintenance costs (tires/brakes can wear faster when you have a lot of power and use it...) I just don't know if I will be happy.

Besides the engine and the low end power differences between 4 and 6 cylinders, i really felt like I wasn't so happy with cornering and steering either. The tester I have driven twice did NOT have the dynamic damper control add-on. That is on my potential build if I go 30i - how much does it help?

When driving my 2011, I always have it in sport mode set for chassis only on the options screen- meaning tight suspension and steering, but no change to transmission. When I would want sport mode for transmission I would get it from the shifter not the sport mode button. and if i really want sport mode I would use shifter and Sport+ I may have done that twice in 6 years.

the 2011 w the Sport transmission in sport mode suspension/steering is a lot of fun to drive. so much so I have been hesitant to trade in at all, but if you see my oil leak thread on the F25 board, you would probably agree its time. needs brakes as well.

the 2018 30i i drove has a sport mode button, it also has settings for engine, transmission and steering if I remember correctly. I turned it on for steering, it tightened up a little, but no match for my 2011. and no match in cornering.

For all of you new M40i owners, please help me with explaining steering/suspension and transmission differences if any between 30i and 40i. Also, what does DDC actually get you on a 30i and Adaptive-M on 40i? Last, do I need to get an M40i to have as much fun driving as my 35i has been?

can anyone go from a 35i to a 30i and be happy? financial decision is one i have to make on my own. It seems tough to replace a car i love driving with one i am going to enjoy less.

Thanks

Greg

Under both links - expand 01 Handling Ride and Braking for specifics

https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/x-mo...xdrive30i.html

https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/x-mo...3/x3-m40i.html

under M40i - the items i know i want more than the HP and torque:

Variable Sport Steering, exclusively tuned for X3 M40i

Performance Control, exclusively tuned for X3 M40i

M Sport Suspension

M Sport Brake

it's the Variable Sport Steering, more than anything, I am gonna miss.

Greg
I have a 2016 X3 35i and test drove a well equipped 2018 X3 30i. Like you, I strongly preferred the engine response and performance of my 35i. I told my CA that I would not consider the 30i because the performance was a clear step down from my current X3.

The new bells and whistles on the 2018 X3 are nice but not compelling for me. I will consider the 2018 X3 M40i when the time comes, but plan to enjoy my 2016 X3 35i for a few more years.

Which 2011 F25 do you have? Did you get the SAP package with DHP? This is sport option that was available prior to M-Sport being released.

Sounds like driving dynamics are important to you. Go test drive a X3 M40i. Then, IMO, it will be an easy decision for you. M40i with Adaptive M Suspension minus the nannies to help drive the price down. You should be able to negotiate under or around 60K. Let us know.

Yes 2011 F25 35i SAP and DHP - maybe one of the few SAP 35i's with 18" wheels - in 2012 they bundled the 19's with SAP. MSport was actually available then, there was a few things I liked about the SAP better and went with that. Deep Sea Blue + Mojave interior. going to be hard to part with it. maybe not so much for a 2018 M40i.

One of the other local dealers should have an M40i - the same one I drove the 35i 6.5 years ago in the first place. I may go hunt one down and drive it. I'm not even sure I need to but i should.

Is Adaptive M suspension similar to what DHP was on the F25 (from what I read it lowers the suspension by .4 inch as well)?

I also seemed to notice LED ambient lighting appearing to come from the lower door pockets, I’m going to have to look for that next time out.

i just got back from a test drive of an M40i. I didn't even need to get off the dealer parking lot to decide. no contest. just need to decide between Phytonic Blue, Glacier Silver and Dark Graphite. I love the blue, but i am coming from Deep Sea Blue now - to similar or I don't care - decisions...

based on my test drive I can live without adaptive-M suspension. the M40i has great suspension and steering without it.

Great choice! Wish I’d had a chance of a test drive before I ordered!

What about Alpine White?

not a black or white car guy, just preference. most of the cars i have owned have been dark blue or some sort of grey/graphite. was set on brown or olive, but they aren't avail in M40i - so its grey, silver or blue for me. just sent the build to my salesman with dark graphite + mocha - has anyone done that?

I'm actually more set on mocha interior with any one of those 3 exteriors.

If the dark graphite is the same as sophisto grey in NL/EU (and I think it is), than this combo is what I ordered. Don´t even have production number, so no pics. Sorry. I hope it will look good together, although I´m little bit afraid, it will be too dark. That will be not the case if there´s panoramic roof present (not on my order list).

Good choice. The M40i is a beast.

Surprises me every day how well it handles for an suv and how much grunt this engine has.
The auto tranny feels so much better from what I had in the F10 535 MSport.

right now its going in as Dark Graphite + Mocha. Premium+Exec, Driver Assist (not plus), HK Audio, heated + vented front only, rear shade, bike rack holder (trailer hitch). Forgive me if i stick w/ 19" wheels and all season. I'm happy with them. I have a rare F25 35i with Sports activity pack and 18" - only available that way in '11 not after. I could do without run flats, ordered the spare so I can go non-RFT in the future without so much risk.

from what I can tell graphite+mocha works. Can change it til monday when I go in to order officially it for mid/late march. PCD may delay me a bit so it may not happen. the issue with a delay is my F25 needs brakes soon, maybe too soon on the rear. so if no SC pickup I just need to find a nice road trip to break it in. I might wake up monday and go to Pythonic Blue.

Back to my original question, there is a difference in the seats between the 30i and the M40i

30i lists as
10-way power front sport seats including 2-way power side bolsters, with 2-way manual headrests and memory system for driver's seat

M40i list as
14-way power front sport seats including 2-way power side bolsters and 4-way lumbar support, with 2-way manual headrests and memory system for driver's seat

I felt the difference the minute i sat down in my M40i test drive today. They are far more comforable. it started to win me over before I started the engine.

Be aware, if you order the spare - you lose a fair amount of space in the rear, and there is a ledge/shelf that takes up the rear floor. Someone may have pictures. But once I saw it in real life, I changed my mind and removed that option from my build.

Totally agree with you that the spare takes up room in the boot. But I am planning to take the runflats off.

Did the same on my 330d and there is always that niggle that you dont have a spare wheel. After getting a nail in my tyre with my then 2 year old daughter has made me go for the spare! Managed to nurse the car to safety but wasnt the best with my “little princess” on board!

I test drove both the X3 330i and a forum member's M40i without adaptive suspension.

No comparison on the power difference. The M40i six is very fast and smooth.

I ordered the M40i with Adaptive Suspension....1900 miles on it......I made the RIGHT choice.

Wish I could justify a 30i, let alone an m40. Ordered one in europe with the 20i motor (for my wife, mostly city driving) but worried about performance too (184ps/290nm).

Please note that it is not the difference of the engine 30i or M40i that’s makes the difference in seats.
The seats in your tested 30i have the ventilate option, then you do not have lumbar support.
The seats in the M40i you tested aren’t the ventilated seats so you do do have the lumbar support option.
