SpaceX
Anybody else think how awesome the launch of Falcon Heavy was.
Not just for the technology involved in actually getting the rocket away but watching the 2 boosters landing simultaneously. Shame about the main core not making it though. The icing on the cake though, watching the manikin spaceman just cruising in the Tesla with the Earth below, Just a perfect laugh out loud moment for their audacity.

The Russians are investing heavily in this and will likely do it cheaper and heavier.
I believe their heavies lift more weight at present. Majority of articles appear to be a bit political and do not mention the Russians. Musk may get a surprise if he goes head to head against the USSof Putin |

I thought it was terrific. Heavy launch vehicle, two boosters landing next to each other and the images of a Tesla Roadster blasting out Bowie in orbit was surreal. Great stuff.
The idea of placing it in to Mars orbit went slight awry and will head out to the Asteroid belt. Oh the irony if the payload impacts some asteroids, sends them hurtling towards Earth and they wipe out the entire planet. My argument against EVs will be complete |

It’s the stuff of dreams, I was promised this as a kid forty years ago. I think his cars are utter wank and are accelerating the end of the world, but this is fantastic.
Love the fact that the BBC had on their news site BFR but no one explained what BFR stood for, very funny. Proper Charlie and the chocolate factory our Elton is, I’ll send me car into space, make a flame thrower and then try and convince everyone we all live in a computer simulation. I bet that so called space suit manaquin is some sort of love robot full of Muskies man fat sent to populate the Oort Cloud. Wibble, wibble as one of our illustrious forum members may chirp.

They were doing this 50 years ago with the Saturn V using slide rules and pocket tables. (the Saturn V could carry over twice as much as the falcon heavy)
Neil Armstrong landed on the moon yet we're all wetting ourselves that a tube can be landed on earth. The space shuttle was a space ship, a freaking space ship over 35 years ago but yet we still look at Musk as some kind of genius breaking boundaries. It's great that he is exploring these things and we need people like him but much greater feats were being done a long time ago, the hype is silly.

I find it ironic and company like Tesla with it's self proclaimed green credentials. Spunks and load of rocket fuel firing a rocket into space. Still. I'd imagine Musk will say there is no atmosphere in space to pollute.

I saw the very last space shuttle night launch. It was around 6am and still pitch black and we were about 10 miles away in Titusville which is about as close as most people can get. That was close enough though, when the sound eventually hit us it hurt, you could feel your organs rattling around and all the car alarms in the area were going off. Was amazing to see but you couldn't believe the noise the thing made.
The shuttle was around 180 decibels whereas the Falcon Heavy was 160. Saturn V was the loudest - around 185. View from 10 miles away with a 200mm lens. Last edited by RickLS7; 02-13-2018 at 04:26 AM.. |

I think it's great he's having a go though, but we really haven't got back to the point where we stopped all those years ago.

I would sooner have Space X join the Green lot in removing debris from Space, than shoving more crap up there.
They are adding to the problem rather than developing a solution. Other countries, companies are looking at reducing the amount of crap up there, although not that trusting of the Chinese idea of huge lasers to take out space junk... |
