Fuel Pump malfunction

At 5400 miles, the fuel pump went out on me. To make matters worst, i was on a road trip in San Francisco when this happened. To make the long story short, I brought my car to BMW San Francisco to get advice if i can drive it back to southern california. They said the dont recommend driving it at all and having them take care of it. And so they gave me a loaner car and will ship my car to my home when its finished. Gonna be about a week to a week and a half wait. What a bummer.

Is this a common problem for the M3's anywhere else?

Lost the pump on my '01 M3 at ~20k, but haven't heard of any new ones going (of course not many miles on most yet).

been there

had the same error: fuel pump malfunction
the car had just 3400km on it
took the car to the dealership
turns out it was just a sensor connected to the fuel pump
the prob is related to the quality of the petrol used, bmw germany said
they only changed the sensor and it was back to normal for me

Im paranoid my fuel pump will go out on me. My cranks have been getting longer and the start is weaker. Only have 1200 miles so i guess we will see.

Fuel system diagram

"The fuel tank is based on the series E92 tank, although the shape has been changed to accommodate the exhaust system. Both intank units are new. The fuel pump is installed in the right-hand unit, and the pressure regulator is installed in the left-hand unit in front of the fuel filter.

The ventilation lines have been adapted, while all other lines have been taken from the E92 335i. The US release is fitted with a tank leakage diagnosis unit.
The electrical controls are described in the MSS60 engine control system.
