Stair gates for young children
Hi all,
After some advise need to look at getting some stair gates at home to keep our daughter safe at home. We have a town house with 2 sets of stairs so looking at 3/4 gates total. My wife bought some cheap ones but they don’t seem to be wide enough. Any recommendations?? |

When we first looked at them we tried a cheapish pressure fit one but with the lower bar etc decided it wasn't sturdy enough and the lower bar created a trip hazard.
Eventually settled on the BabyDan Multidan Extending Wooden Safety Gate, Beech (purchased from amazon) which have been great for the last 2 years. Only problem as they have been screwed into the woodwork is I'll have to re-gloss when they have been taken down. |

We have just bought stair gates for ours, went for the screw on type, more long winded to fit but they mean a wider opening and no trip bar along the bottom! Also much easier to open one handed.

Thanks for the reply’s guys! Our house is only 18 months old and I really don’t want to be screwing gates to door frames or woodwork!
AJfoggy - how do the aluminium ones fix to walls/door fames? |

Doesn’t really matter how old the house is, a dab of pollyfilla and a spot of paint and you’d never know it was ever there!

You can get ones that don't have to be fixed but I'd only risk them at the bottom of the stairs. |

Get the cheapest easiest pushfit ones you can get..... we only had ours up for under 12 months from when he was 10 months when he could walk till around 1.5yrs when we was going up and down the stairs confidently.
The pressure fit ones are very sturdy... had our little one literally tugging and climbing up them they wont budge! He’s 2 now and only fallen down them once... but ironicaly that was when we had the gates up! We had 2 mothercare for £30 pushfit... downstairs i had to cut a block of wood (and painted it white) to allow it to fit... cheaper than buying the extensions to widen them. After we removed them i had to repaint the gloss on the banisters where the pressure cap was as they had yellowed from no uv.... and paint the wall as they used double sided tape which removed the paint... so screwfit or pressure ones both may need some patching up after. |

Another vote for the Numi, we had 2, great gates and usually find them somewhere at nowhere near list price.
Ours is 3.5 and still can’t operate it, the cheaper type with the usual kind of lift up handles he cracked by 2! |

We have screw fit ones as well. Mainly chose them to not have the bar across the bottom. Seemed to make sense, stopping a toddler with the gate, but then having a trip hazard at the top when they start learning to navigate them didn't.
Also glad I did. My 3 year old stands on it and swings back and forth, despite being told not to. I don't think I'd trust the pressure ones as much as screw in. We have these, £35 each https://www.mothercare.com/mothercar...tm_content=PLA |

20 months old, she climbs up and down already pretty well, and seem to know to only go up/down when we are there. So haven't bothered with stair gates.
Potty training is next.......apparently advice is to wait till summer and than let them poo/wee as much as they want in the garden?? |

We have one of these on our bedroom door.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Safety-1st-...7066598&sr=8-5 Use it to keep the dog out of bedroom (and me when v drunk lol) We have had it nearly 6 years and it's obviously used numerous times daily. Far more than most baby gates ever will. Handles a 35kg Dalmatian standing on it with front paws. You don't need to pay a fortune for a decent gate. |
