M6 Southbound - Pothole over Jct 16. Between Lane 2 & 3

Anyone else hit it? I caught it yesterday afternoon. It's screwed my OSF tyre. Started a claim through the Highways agency, but f&@k me it's enormous. If you hit it on a bike I reckon it would have you off. I honestly expected to get out to find the tyre, wheel and suspension missing!!!!!

1000's of vehicles must hit it each day. Unbelievable that a motorway could be left in such an appalling state!!!!!

I'd say if you've started a claim then make sure you've got documented evidence but it's not easy when it's in the middle of the M6.

I hit an enormous pothole locally, it burst a tyre. Made enquiries with the local council, they told me of course I can claim for damage, let them know where and when it happened. Only for them to send someone out and paint a white circle round the pothole which signifies they are looking at it and therefore they won't entertain a claim.

If I'd taken a picture at the time with a ruler showing the depth of the pothole I'd have been fine.

Travelled back from Manchester on Sunday towards the midlands on the same stretch of motorway. All I can say is WTF absolutely appalling the state of the road.Even my other half was saying the same, really thought there would be f*ck all left of my wheels and tyres by the time we passed through that awful stretch. Have to be honest spent more time looking at the road trying to avoid them f*kin craters than looking ahead.

Yeah, clearly you're not allowed to wander into a live motorway to take pictures. The whole M6 J19 - J16 stretch is littered with potholes. Haven't noticed white circles around any of the holes to be fair and when I logged it with the Highways Agency they said a lot of people had reported it and similar holes.
Will have to wait and see but a new tyre and alignment will be the best part of £300 !!!!!

Agreed , absolutely shocking never seen anything like it on a motorway. The amount of damage they must do on a daily basis must be shockingly high. I'm sure I saw the pothole, sorry the valley between the 1st and 3rd lane you came to grief on, just managed to miss it myself.

Good luck and I hope that the b***ards pay up in full

I hit this pothole at 30mph a while back. It was raining heavily and late evening, and I simply didn't see it. Lost control of the car temporarily when the tyre blew out. Note the friendly steel spike protruding above the water line!
Took pictures first thing the following morning before Thames Water filled it in that afternoon. They paid up pretty swiftly and sent a letter of apology. Mind you, it's hard to argue with the pictures I sent them - and that's the problem with motorway potholes.

For a developed country, our roads are a f***ing disgrace, as is the state in which our utilities contractors leave them most of the time

Not just the M6, the M25 is a disgrace, lots of holes just between J22 and J21

I always report potholes on local roads using the council's online facility

There were three or four large potholes very close to each other (within 25m) that I reported and they've just repaired (badly) the largest. Of course potholes continue to get bigger the longer they're left so at some point they'll have to come back. Madness, surely much cheaper to repair a hole when it's small ????!

Was it in a 50mph stretch? I hit one on the M6, saw it at the last second (night, lashing rain) but hit the thing square on. Made an almighty bang and fully expected the dash to light up with all manner of warnings but thankfully nothing.

Yep.

M6 south just as the 50 mph zone ends at J16

There are plenty of others both north and south between this two junctions though!!!!!!

Sounds like I got away with it then but yeah, the bloody thing was massive and I couldn't believe it existed on a motorway.
