Volkswagen Up GTI

These seem to be getting great reviews in the press. Not sure I could live with such a small car but seems a lot of fun can be had for £13k. The spiritual return to the MK 1 Golf GTI apparently.

On my list as a new station car but don't think it ticks the box of "doesn't attract attention if left in station car park overnight" and a new Ibiza fr with similar engine is probably cheaper....

I reckon it will be nearer £15k by time spec added and very little discount - at that I am out.

The Mk 1 golf GTi was 3610mm long, 1610mm wide, had 110 (or 115)hp, and a 0-60 of 9 seconds.
The Up GTI is ........ 3600mm long, 1645mm wide, has 113hp, and a 0-60 time of 8.8 seconds.

Is this VW admitting they've turned the Golf into a lardball. Kinda like Diego Maradona on the kebab diet

I like the sound of the Up GTi, having had a couple of mk2 Golf GTis, but I would rather have a 3-4 year old car as a station car. One that you can take that narrow space and don’t really care if someone opens their door into it. How about a 2014 Mini Cooper or Cooper S?

All cars gave got bigger and heavier so it's not just VW. Won't be much discount for sure, there are a small number destined for the uk this year and with great reviews and the GTi heritage they should find homes pretty easily. My wife is lucky she got her new Golf GTi a few weeks ago or she could be in an Up lol.

I reckon there will be some cracking lease deals on them, and I'll be honest I'd love one, like a go kart with a DAB radio...what's not to like?

Seriously looking into one of these for the Mrs to replace her Fiat 500 which she's had since new. I'm getting to put a bit of influence in as in my opinion the Fiat is dangerously slow, I've told her the next car will have a bit of poke in it.

Delighted to say she's taking a bit of interest in it. Anyone know when it's going to hit the showroom?

I was thinking about Spending 1k on a 10 year old Ford Focus for that very purpose. Stick a disklok on it and leave it parked anywhere without worrying!

Really interesting, thank you for that info. You've confirmed what I thought about cars increasing in size. The Golf is the perfect example. Seems hard to believe that the Up is almost the same size as a Mk1 Golf.
Nice little second motor though.

It's a video from 8 months back, so likely a concept or similar.

It does however give you an idea on the size difference.

Shows how our cars have ballooned over the years.

Cars have so much bigger but also so much more powerful. The Mk1 GTi had 110bhp and was considered a fast car, the current model GTi has 230 standard or 245 with Performance Pack. Also acceleration times have been slashed. Pretty common nowadays for the 0 to 60 dash taking 5 seconds or less.

The standard Up! has a great little chassis and is a hoot to drive, albeit at lower speeds. A bit more torque and power would suit it very well.

However the elephant in the room is that the Up GRI weighs nearly 200kg more than the Mk1 Golf GTI. The straight line performance assisted by the extra torque and better modern day tyres.

Still I have to say it does look like a very tempting proposition.

I have a 14 year old Pug 206 which is perfect for the station run but it’s just a bit crap for anything else.... something a bit better, small and fun would be nice for just having a blast in.

Had a Mini Cooper (latest) so don’t want another. Might get s 4 year old Fiesta as a decent compromise - good to drive but not too obvious....

I also have an elderly Polo as my car park and dog carrying vehicle. A new Up would be too good for those duties but also thinking a 4 or 5 year old Fiesta would be good. The 1.0 100bhp engine is a peach but quite rare to find.

Sounds a good price for one with that engine, retail prices are minimum £6k but maybe more like £6.5-£7K. Clearly a lot of miles will have an influence.
