I’ve found myself in a desperate situation.

The wife’s parents have their house for sale, they have a villa in Spain where they plan to spend 2/3 of their time which leaves circa 4 months in Blighty per year.

The Mrs has invited them to live with us when they sell up until they buy another house here which knowing them will take an absolute age or just will not happen.

What do I do?

Has anybody else been in such a wretched position and what did you do?

We had a similar situation but much shorter as the Out Laws were staying for a month whilst their house was renovated.

As much as the old man is ok, she is annoying as FCUK! We ended up going on holiday for a week just to get away from them and had to cancel every shitty recording on the Sky box after they'd left.

No advice that I can offer apart from to wish you the very best of luck.......and consider a divorce solicitor!

Just do your best to make them feel unwelcome. Don't buy enough food for the week so they have to supplement, cancel sky and only have freeview, make sure the spare bedroom is always cold, not enough hot water for their showers, shit with the door open etc etc.

They will soon buy a new house and fuck off

Exactly what I was going to say.

Had outlaws for a bit - went on holiday - painful! They are able to break things, burn a brand new carpet with straighteners, drink a bottle of my wine each night, didn’t do dishes etc etc.

Has to be put in context that I’m not a good host and like my own space.

They are family, blood is thicker than water.....but it’s tough!

Have you actually spoken to your missus and explains your view? If she cannot see that it will be a nightmare then it may be worth broaching the subject.

My MIL is a bit of a nightmare, everything she does grates on me. I’ve made my feelings clear to my wife and as such she persuaded her not to stay long when she does visit.

There is a lot to be said about being blunt and not trying to sugarcoat things. Sometimes if it looks like a pig, smells like a pig, grunts like a pig, then just call it a pig and don’t worry about hurting it’s (their) feelings.

Set rules with other half. I will be grumpy as fuck, they must pay board and rent as they are not guests but lodgers, I will be civil but no more, I will not follow them round cleaning up after them and I will be abusive as fuck if they take the piss out of us.

Also define a timeline, at end of three month, if not moved, must begin to look at short term rental, at six months must be out or moved to siblings, friends etc.

Good luck as I say this knowing I have no in laws but would be the same if my parents asked something similar.

It's just a case off suck it up and go with it.

Having anyone stay over longer than is comfortable is a pain.

Remember it ca be reciprocal, as above you may want renovation on your house and move in with them.

Also from what you are saying, I assume you are not going to stop with them in Spain and make use of villa, as you would never be so two faced.

Not wanting them stopping with you, but expecting full use of villa...

When we moved 18 months ago we had to spend a week at the in laws...longest week of my life! Unfortunately I didn’t even have work to escape to as I work from home 😔 at one point we was looking at living there for 3 months! Luckily our buyer of our apartment played ball and moved his moving date to suit us!

Make sure you get up really early every Saturday /Sunday morning and enthusiastically announce "right, let's go find that new house!" In a thoughtful, helpful way.

And every time you see them, after work etc ask about how the house hunting went that day.

They'll eventually get tired of you 'help' and sod off

Thats your best plan, honest but brutal. Get them to rent an apartment and help them with the house move. Perhaps 1-2 nights at your place as a maximum. Otherwise, you will resent their presence more each day that they spend with you.

Just tell the Mrs that you have had a "re-think" and be honest with her.
