Italian speeding fine
Just been sent an email from hertz with what a letter from the local rozzers where we were on holiday in October. From what I can gather it's for speeding but it's a scan so can't Google translate it.
The letter was from December and hertz said they are passing on my details. Has anyone had this before? Do they send an English letter? Ar5e. |

At least you got a letter!!
I got a charge of £40 on my credit card then a week later another £80 from Europcar. I had to contact them to find out what they were for. They then sent me 2 Europcar generatated invoices for the charges saying I had 3 traffic offences against me from Lucca, Italy. I asked for actual proof of the offences and still waiting. They did say that by law, I had to be notified by the Italian police within 90 days, which I wasn't and still haven't. How long ago were you in Italy?

I got 2 from Germany that they chased up numerous times until paid and 1 from Austria that was never chased up which included points with the notification - this was 4 years ago so I'm not sure if the law has changed since.
The notifications came direct from the Police and not via the car hire company |

My hire car company charged me €40 euro to pass my detail on to the police in florence council {Thanks). It cost me €90 euro per offence. i made 2 illegal turns. I was lost, wasn't sure what the signs say, The GPS keep taking me round and round so i said fxxk it i turned and arrived ag my destination instead of gods know how more miles i had to divert.
Anyway offical letter arrived with both fines and it stated any challenge on the fine must be written in italian only... |

I know the fines always come from italian official mail. Some of the car companies may be kinda shady i would ask to see proof. And if you dont pay the fine? I know it would be annoying but you can also type the main portions into google translate.

well Google translate was useless.
however Italian bloke I work with wasn't. Transpires, all the letter from the police states is what Hertz said and my details will be passed on in accordance with section blah of blah. A full page of text and official logos etc for no reason... I will however get a fine directly from the police or hertz pay it and they will charge me. I'm hoping it's the latter assuming it's not too much, they will of course charge me silly money for forwarding a letter but at least I can argue with them and not the police.. |

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the Hertz branch trying to extract some extra cash from you, in my experience there is no one as dishonest as the Italians, in fact my company won't send goods there due to the amount of attempted fraud we've had in the past.

There are a lot of scams going on targeting tourists around payment of tolls, speeding, illegal turns etc in Italy - my elderly parents got sent several letters after hiring a car in Milan, each threatening ever more serious consequences, including court proceedings. They just binned them - that was three years ago and no comebacks. I'd just ignore it, and make sure no-one ever signs for anything delivered. You can always say nothing was ever received by us, m'lud.....

Had the same experience a couple of years ago from Hertz. We were also in Italy at the time. Turns out I drove into a town with a restricted centre which is only accessible to permit holders - residents, shop owners, suppliers etc. Of course the sign to tell me I couldn't drive in there was apparently a small round sign on a lamp post and in Italian! I got stung £40 by Hertz and then about 80euro for the actual fine. If I chose to appeal I had to do it in writing in Italian and have a solicitor represent me at the local municipal court! I just paid the fine rather than risk refusal next time I travel to Italy. I do think it's a money making scam fleecing tourists.
