I don't really do NY resolutions, but I liked this. It's from a speech at a graduation ceremony given by the comedian Tim Minchin. Link to full video at the bottom, but here is my mangled summary of his '9 life lessons':

1. Dream small and often
2. Make someone else happy
3. It's all luck
4. Exercise!
5. Be hard on your own opinions
6. Be a teacher
7. Focus on what you love
8. Respect people with less power than you
9. Don't rush

two of the words of wisdom my Dad gave me before he died when I was 21....

always treat people in your team as though one day they may be your boss - if you recruited well they could be!

always look after your PA as she will get you out of the trouble you get yourself into...

last one is a bit out of date now but I apply the generic - bought raffle tickets for the xmas raffle of supplier gifts for all of the lowest paid in the office rather than for me....

Very true words of wisdom - I have ended up managing the people that recruited me as well as my then-peers who reported to them at the time. Sadly, no PA :-)

I like your raffle ticket example. One of my things is tipping a cleaner a few quid at Heathrow when flying. They are usually surprised and it goes well (in my head) with a quick nod to whoever is 'upstairs' keeping the plane safe.

Currently witnessing the impact of this.

A girl I know (brilliant at her job) moved to a director role over and above her existing boss.

A few people where suprised, however it's a well earned promotion that has went to the correct person.
