Offset question

I'm getting some M5 replica rims, and need some advice on the best offset.

In the front I'm going with an 18x8 rim. The available offsets are 38mm and 20mm. I don't want to use spacers, and 38mm is more tucked than stock, so I was thinking of going with 20mm. Is this too aggressive? Will it degrade the handling and steering response of my car? Will it stick out too much and look bad?

On the rear, I'm going with an 18x9 rim, with a 25mm offset.

Any advice would be appreciated

the 18x8 front with 38mm offset will work with the 18x9 rear 25mm offset. The 20mm offset is to aggressive for front.

I'm very confused, several other folks have told me that 20mm is fine for the front and the 38mm will look too tucked in. Remember these are 18x8 and not 18x8.5 rims. How do I find out for sure what's going to be best?

I had 19's before, but the ride was a little too abrasive for our torn up roads in Houston.

I'm being told by ALT (the manufacturer) that the 38mm offset is the correct one for the E90. So, I'm thinking about doing 18x8 (ET 38mm) 235/40/R18 in front, and 18x9 (ET 25mm) 265/35/R18 in the back.

Does everyone think this will look good?

38mm is safe. With 20mm offset, it's 14mm pushed out and would look okay too. I have my 8.5"/38mm + 10mm spacer. It's = 12mm push-out and looks just fine, not aggressive at all. However, spacers in front is not recomended, so I'll remove them.

can someone explain offset to me.. i always thought offset is how much the wheel is sticking out from the mount. therefore a higher offset means the wheels further out. but it seems to be opposite? im confused.
