Steering issues - 228i

Hello all. First post ever, unfortunately about an issue with my 2016 228i. It's a rwd manual.

Mostly at speeds 35/40 and up, my steering sometimes feels abnormal near the center position. When I have the wheel turned a little to the right or in the center for a period of time - when I turn to the left instead of turning smoothly, I will encounter resistance, and then the wheel will slip to the position I was intending it. Has anyone had anything like this?

Do you have THP? I have experienced a similar sensation in comfort mode on the highway. It's hard to describe but basically you give the wheel a small input and you experience this weird slipping feeling coming back to center. My car is a 16' M235i which has VSS. It's the first car I've had with VSS and has done this since new.

I've always chalked it up to a product of the VSS. I think the VSS comes with THP on the 228i.

I have THP on a 228i, and I cannot report experience this sensation. I think your best next step is a drive with a technician, and asking to test drive another unit in stock for comparison (if you can find one...especially with THP!). I will add that the M2/M4 lower control arm swap has made the steering even better than I was expecting.

I actually don't have the THP - but what you're describing is exactly what's happening. I got my car as a 5 month old certified one, and it was customized - not M or THP, but same wheel setup (staggered, low profile, etc)...was VSS an option? I didn't think my car had VSS, but the steering does get firmer with increased speed - the head tech at the dealer it's currently being serviced at thinks it has VSS as well - I have to confirm what's up. Weird thing is I don't feel like it did this slipping thing since I first got it, but only started happening recently.

Yes I agree - this is exactly what I intend to do.

Interesting...like I said I noticed this on the way home from picking my car up in 16'. This is my 5th new BMW but the first with VSS so I always contributed it to that.

Definitely let us know the outcome.
