Steel Wheels Available for My 230?

I'm tired of bending expensive alloy wheels on crappy Michigan roads in winter. I've searched and looked but can't find any plain steel wheels for my 2018 230ix. I'm looking for 17's and maybe even 16's to mount my snow tires on.

Any forum members that have cracked this nut? Your suggestions very welcome.

Thanks,

Myron

Hi fellow Michigander...not sure what your actual price point is, but I’ve sourced my inexpensive alloy winter wheels from tirerack.com. Perhaps a bit more than steel, but they usually have some good low end wheels for this purpose, under $100. If you haven’t ordered your winter tires yet (Michelin XIcexi3 or Blizzak WS80), they will mount and balance for free before shipping to you or a local installer.

Thanks for the replies! I had checked at Tire Rack, of course, but no steel wheels.

I just checked at RSSW and they DO have just what I'm looking for, so I've sent them an email to see if they'll ship to me in Michigan.

Also, I meant to put this post in the Tires & Wheels Technical forum, so sorry about that. Still a newbie...

Thanks,

Myron

I’m not sure if Costco in the US has them, but in Canada they have a 17” steel wheel for the F22 228i/230i. The wheel is model number X40856 and is CAD$69.99 each.

Double check that you can mount steel wheels on an X model. Used to be you could not because the AWD system uses the brakes and heats the wheels too much.

aerobod Yes, I think this is the RSSW part number. I have an email into them.

wdc330i Ok, thanks. This hadn't occurred to me. Looks like I have a little more research to do.

I will let the forum know what I find out!

This is a new one to me, never heard anybody invoke brake heat as a reason to go w/ alloys. Would be interested to know where this comes from (I'm assuming that wdc330i means the traction control, as no reason for an AWD to use brakes).

We had an E46 325xiT, and the manual said not to use steel wheels. And yes, the traction control activates the brakes.

I remember this because I ran 17-inch steel wheels on my E46 330i. It was RWD.

I purchased a cheap set of BBS wheels from tirerack which are made in Germany. The other cheaper wheels from are chinese, I think thats one of the last places where I would cut costs imo.

Yeah I went the BBS route too. They have held up very well I hit a snow buried curb once at decent speed destroying the tire, wheel was 100% fine.

Sport Edition TR in house brand isn't excellent for one comparison.

Classified section had good deals on BBS SR / SX sometimes.

Thanks all for the replies. I did find the RSSW wheels for sale at a retailer in the US, Six Robblees. I used to love the look of steel wheels with winter tires on my Saabs, but I think I'll stick with factory alloys for this new 230. I just can't picture it with the steelies!

Best,

Myron

I am selling the stock 17" wheels and tires off my 228. They have 7k miles on them and in great shape. Should help some to go to a 17" wheel but they aren't steel.
