Cel Afe Cold Air Intake

Installed AFE MAGNUM Cold air intake in Early October - I had absolutely no issues until last week when I got a Check Engine Light - It was a pretty generic code so we cleared it - game back on again this week - I have a great BMW service department. They are going to return the car to the stock CAI and we will run it for a week to see. The initial thought is that it might have something to do with outside temp. It has gotten a lot colder here in NH and as cold air is much denser than warm they may be a issue with the increased air flow which is triggering a code. I will notify AFE this morning since I believe mine was the first one on a 2018 M240I x drive.
If anyone has seen this issue on a 2107 M240 please post here. This CEL does not appear to cause any performance issues just a pain looking at the little yellow engine.

Does the aftermarket air intake use an oiled air filter? If it does it’s likely that the oil contaminated the MAF.

No dry filter - We will have a answer end of next Dealer is putting back the OEM CAI Monday- A hold has been put on sales of AFE intakes for the M240 as of now

Results are in on the AFE CAI - first we ran a smoke test to make sure there were not leaks and there were none - Re-installed the OEM CAI and have there have been no CEL for a week. Determination is that due to the denser air in the cold weather the AFE intake was bringing in too much air causing the car to run lean which produced the Check Engine light code - I would like to hear from anyone with either a 2017 or 2017 M240I x drive that may live in a warmer area and has the Magnum AFE cold air intake installed - If there are not codes in warmer weather then I may keep the intake and install in spring

I would honestly doubt the CEL is bacause of too much air. I personally run a BMS Intake on my 230xi (same engine series but 4 cylinder) without any issue with the weather up here in canada (and never got a CEL last winter with temperature down to -25f). And with looking at pictures from the Momentum intake it seem there is more restriction than the BMW,

The head mechanic (20 years experience) is sure increased air flow is causing the car to run leaner than factory specs - it is running now with no issues on the stock CAI - and the AFE intake does allow more air due to size and the filter used - that is it's only purpose over stock - I will more than likely keep it and re-install in the spring - since it does give you slightly more HP and Torque - also I am installing a dinan mid pipe and a elite tune in the spring - like to get the car in the high 11 range. Just a fyi I was getting about 2 MPG more on the AFE intake -

Unless you are running the CTS intake, it is recommended that you get a JB4 with any open air intake.

It has been confirmed that the AFE CAI will give you a CEL - that code indicates too lean a mixture - BMW put stock back on and I ran for 2 weeks with no CEL - I then put back the AFE and it almost immediately we got the same CEL code - ran a smoke test to make sure no leaks etc - Cleared and ran it again - same CEL - I am now back on the stock CAI -
Mike makes a good point above about a tune - I will hang on to the AFE until spring when I install some tune (have not decided yet on which tune want to see results and if there is anything new by then) AFter putting on the tune I will put the AFE back on and see -
All the BMW experts agree that that one reason is the denser air in cold weather which exceeds flow limits using the AFE

Sorry to hear that, keep in mind only the JB4 will take care of that code.

The density of the air is not the problem here. The intake design is. With that being said, it's not a bad thing.

Basically, from a tuning standpoint, bigger intake means more air flowing past the MAF.
The engine is now getting more air than before but still the same amount of fuel therefore throwing the AFR off.

Most intakes are close enough not to throw a CEL, especially since the fuel trims are learned over time, but some do require tuning to be calibrated properly.
So with that being said, any tune specific to this intake will do the trick.
