X3M V8?

I read an article in Road and Track today and they hinted to 500HP X3M. Is there any evidence that this is true???

At one point people were speculating it would be a V8, but I think it has subsequently been confirmed to be a newer turbo V6.

All I’ve read is there will be a tuned version of the M40i’s B58 engine, called S58, and it will be 450+ HP. Sort of like how the N55 was in the 3 series and the M3 got an S55.

Got it. I'm looking forward this newest M model!

Upcoming X3M will run on a S58 with @460-500HP...same engine that will be used in the upcoming M3/M4. This is based on the current B58 that is in the X3 M40i. Single turbo-twin scroll I6...no V6 to see here.

That said, I hope they change their minds and throw in a V8!!!

Yeah, I misspoke when I said V6, I had the V8 on the brain. Of course it's an I6.

Yeah, there are a lot of M models now. Funny enough though, the ones I see in the wild without going to some meetup are by far still M3s and M5s. I feel like I’ve seen dozens of those, but only one M2 and perhaps two X5Ms. I’d be curious to see the breakdowns on sales numbers.

It all depends on where you live. In NYC, F-150s are rare.

Here, there are Ms everywhere. Lots of X5M/X6M too.

Market placement is going to be the challenge for BMW. They certainly have an array of 3.0 liter I6 M motors to choose from. My prediction is that the F97 X3 M will be slightly lighter than the G01 X3 M40i; 4230 for the M40i vs maybe 4000 lbs to 4100 lbs for the X3 M.

The F85 X5 M is 4.1 seconds to 60 MPH and the X3 M40i is 4.6 seconds to 60. I can't see BMW putting out an X3 M that is faster than the X5 M until it is revised so I'm thinking we'll see the X3 M come in at around 4.2 to 4.3 seconds.

BMW Blog claimed twice that the X3 M will get the new S58 motor with 450 to 460 HP in these articlse back in March, 2017:
http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/03/31/ba...2019-bmw-x3-m/
http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/03/13/bm...50-horsepower/

With the M40i at 355 HP and 369 lb-ft torque and the S55 at 425 HP and 406 ft-lb of torque, I think seeing an X3 M with 450 to 460 HP is optimistic.

BMW Blog later revised their estimate in an article from August 29th, dropping it to 425-430 HP; I think this is more realistic.
http://www.bmwblog.com/2017/08/27/up...outh-carolina/

It would not surprise me if the X3 M ended up with the same base S55 motor in the current F8X or a tuned down S58 with a possible Competition Package a year or so later with slightly more HP as the F8x M3/4 and X5/6 M get revised.

Either way, it will be a beast of an SUV. I'll be real interested in seeing what price point it comes out at.

I'm crossing my fingers for 2019 X3M/X4M with S55, it'll be a first time for BMW to release S58 (new engine model) into X3M instead of M3/M4.
Maybe they'll do S55 first year release like they did with my X4 M40i (N55 revised) haha.

The S63 debuted in the X5M and X6M and the M5 and M6 got it when they changed models.

Same thing should happen with the X3M and X4M and the S58. I also can't see them going under 450 hp with it, they have to compete with the GLC63, Macan Turbo and Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

I hope they do put S55TU if needed haha take things from B58/S58
So they can release in mid 2019 to really compete as many ppl like myself are giving back 2016 lease then.

S63 in the E70 X5M/X6M is very different than the
S63TU that came into 2013 M5/M6 which then made its way into F85/F85 X5M/X6M

Unfortunately, the S63 was not that great even till this day.
Now the S63TU is such a beast that it will continue to be used.

Now that the G01 M40i is out we have some hard numbers on it (HP, ht, width, weight, HP, torque, 0-60, ...), so it seems possible to run an estimated simulation with what we think the X3M will be able to do in an acceleration curve. But looking at how BMW has handled their upper echelon regular models with their M counterparts, I am not seeing any consistency to allow a good guess. In some of the models the M is shorter and wider, others just shorter, others about the same. In some, the weight is less, and in others it is actually more. Across the board the Cd does seem to be higher so I guessed on that. And based on the X5M I guessed a weight at about 170 lbs heavier.

If you all can provide some guesses for the height and width (which determines the frontal area which is used in the calculations), and the possible torque numbers for 425 HP and 455 HP, I can run the curves some time when I get a chance. Or if you want different HP numbers, it doesn't matter to me, but as it takes a while to set up it would be better for me if we can narrow to two possible M scenarios.

Max Well, I think you could plug the following numbers for HP/Torque based off the M3/4 and Club Sport versions:
Base M3/M4 is 425 HP and 410 lb-ft of torque
Club Sport version is 460 HP and 442 lb-ft of torque

I still stick by my assertion that the X3 M will be slightly lighter than the M40i. The X5 M is heavier in part because it utilizes a larger motor. I think BMW will shave some weight through some lighter parts, but I believe this will really be dependent upon the price point they decide to hit.

Thanks, MN2///M - I've entered the HP and torque info per your recs, and shaved off about 30 lbs. I compromised between the X5 and X6 ext dimensional changes by lowering the ht 1" and making it 3/4" wider. So I have the numbers needed to plug into the calculations now. I've got some travelling to do over the next three days so won't get a chance to set it up right away, though, but it will give me some good seat time in the M40i on Interstates.

I? thought the HP on X3M were expected to be more in the 490 range no?

I doubt it will be any wider, the X5 M50d and X5M are the exact same width, same holds for the X6 M50d and X6M (M Sport package is really all that's needed to match widths though). I'm guessing the wheel and tire combos will be the same as well, making the 21" wheels standard in the US models with the 20" wheels a no cost option.

Until more firm information is obtained, it seems reasoned guesses are all we have now, but I can run the 490 HP for you as well if you wish. As I use my 'DIY' group of calculations it takes a few hours for me to generate each acceleration graph but I don't mind - just need to find the time. Professional software would take a few seconds.

I think the 2 and 3 series steered me into adding width, as the lower series models are also M series, yet the M240i xDr is 3.2" narrower than the M2, and the M340i xDr is 2.6" narrower than the M3 if I read the dimensions for all of these correctly. The ht/width changes I made don't make a huge difference as it changes the frontal surface area by only .01 m sq.

Well.....maybe the X3 M will have 450 to 460 HP; Jason posted this update yesterday:
