2015 228i TPMS - In-Wheel or ABS?
What kind of TPMS does the 2015 228i have? If I get a new set of rims for winter tires, do I need to buy a set of TPMS sensors as well, or will it work just fine? I would probably buy non-RFTs, and the car is a daily driver.

You need to get new sensors with the new rims. They are not very expensive, and the sensors which Tire Rack offers with their wheel/tire packages work just fine.

I've bought the rims already (they're on the way). I was thinking I would ask the installer to swap the sensors from the stock rims to the new rims, and buy a set of winter tires for the old rims. What might happen if I didn't have TPMS on the winter set? |

I just went through the same exercise for my winter set up. Yes, the BMW OEM sensors are expensive, but there are aftermarket that you can find that are less expensive. I got lucky and found some take off of an OEM wheel set.
The expense and hassle of removing from my summer wheels just didn't seem worth it. The cost of a second set of sensors was about the cost to remove them and reinstall them once. |

I also like the idea of having a second set of wheels and tires complete and ready to go if needed. |

You don't absolutely NEED sensors. The car may give you some warning, but will still run without them.
