2015 228i TPMS - In-Wheel or ABS?

What kind of TPMS does the 2015 228i have? If I get a new set of rims for winter tires, do I need to buy a set of TPMS sensors as well, or will it work just fine? I would probably buy non-RFTs, and the car is a daily driver.

You need to get new sensors with the new rims. They are not very expensive, and the sensors which Tire Rack offers with their wheel/tire packages work just fine.

Really? I thought they were over $300 separately.

I've bought the rims already (they're on the way). I was thinking I would ask the installer to swap the sensors from the stock rims to the new rims, and buy a set of winter tires for the old rims. What might happen if I didn't have TPMS on the winter set?

I just went through the same exercise for my winter set up. Yes, the BMW OEM sensors are expensive, but there are aftermarket that you can find that are less expensive. I got lucky and found some take off of an OEM wheel set.

The expense and hassle of removing from my summer wheels just didn't seem worth it. The cost of a second set of sensors was about the cost to remove them and reinstall them once.

Thanks. Is it really that difficult to remove them for a reinstall? My local installer said that he will do it for no more than what he would charge for just moving the tires over to the new rim. Now I'm worried.

My local tire shop quoted a mount and balance for each wheel to make the swap. It's not complicated work. Just labor. But I didn't shop around. I used this to justify the expense of the second set of sensors.

I also like the idea of having a second set of wheels and tires complete and ready to go if needed.

Got it! These installers said it won't cost extra to do the swap so I think I will do that now, and then look for aftermarket sensors before winter. Are there any recommended brands?

You don't absolutely NEED sensors. The car may give you some warning, but will still run without them.
