Wireless charging
With our upcoming 4GC being specced with wireless charging and the new iPhones announced with wireless charging it seems like a good time to upgrade my phone. I'm having trouble deciding between the 8 Plus and the X - so my question is - will an 8 Plus (so 6 Plus/7 Plus) fit in the wireless charging bracket or is it too big?

Edit https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Go...es/10414,10411 I just did a comparision on the above site, didnt realise how small the X is. The 8+ definetly won't fit, as its bigger than my Pixel XL, i recon the X should "just fit" |

The wireless charger in my GC can accommodate phones up to 150 mm. My Galaxy S8 measures 149 mm and just fits.
I understand that the length of the new Iphone X is 143.6 mm, so it should fit comfortably.

I'm going to google this and find out if it's true after I write this. If that's the case no need to go for a phone upgrade as I really like the home button on it. Not in the mood for facial recognition tbh. Cheers... |

The lady is correct- exactly what I did.
I have this on my phone ........ https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 .......and also have this plugged into my laptop at work for charging in the office https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Works great. The phone cover doesn't give 100% protection to the phone but it's a compromise I'm prepared to have. |

I have a Samsung S7 and that charges wireless BUT it is so slow it's almost unusable.
1 hour charge in the car gives about 10% on the battery, just not worth it. |

Interesting I had wondered about this. Cable seems the way still really that very very poor! I wonder if your active on a long conf call if it might actually still be discharging even though on the charger.

Kind of pointless in my view. Most smartphones support one form or another of fast charging - thats why you get a 15-20 W adapter. Takes some power to charge a 5000mAh battery. Charge rate on Qi (most popular wireless standard) not that great. Hours to charge a smartphone.. In about 2-3 years it will be redundant in new cars as the USB ports will be USB- PD compliant : that is, for any PD compliant phone or laptop/chrome book), it will fast charge in the car (to 45w for laptop for examp,e).. So you'll be able to fast charge your phone in the car, just like you do when you plug it into the wall,... you'll be surprised as your wall adapter is actually quite intelligent now... user experience much better vs messing with wireless charging .. pure gimmick..

Ha, yes this is how wireless charging has always worked, its a slow charge, takes around around 6 hours to fully charge up a phone. The only exception is samsung, they sell a quick charge wireless charge. Not sure what black magic they use for this, but its the only thing ive seen that can wireless charge at any speed. Fine for a dock when you go to sleep, not good for a quick burst while you drive.

Also, the iphone doesnt have quick charge, the new ones coming out (8 & 10) will support quick charge but apparently the cables they come with in the box wont be the quick charge cables, so to say its pointless as everyone has quick charge and wireless is a gimmick is abit wrong in my opinion |

Not a gimmick for me either. I don't really expect it to do a boost charge on a dead phone - quite happy to use a cable for that - but if the wireless charging prevents the phone from actually discharging on a journey that's good enough. On the Audi, for example, you drop your phone into the so-called "phonebox" in the armrest where it wirelessly charges the phone and inductively copules the antenna to the roof-mounted antenna on the car, all with no wires. What's not to like?

Small experiment on my commute this morning. Phone charge increased 12% in the 20 minutes drive. Assuming the battery charges linearly, that suggests a full charge from zero can be achieved in less than 3 hours.

Thanks SB. Good enough just to stick the phone on the charger just for my half-hour commute. Cables are too much faff for a short trip.

I removed my case on the return trip last night and it made sod all difference. charge rate was still about 10% an hour with all apps shut down. One thing I have noticed is that it is not "fast Wireless Charging" in the car and I cant find out if the car wireless charger is capable of this. |
