Brake pad wear on X4, experiences?

Been spending time on the X3 forum on this issue, but wanted to confirm with X4 owners and not assume they use the same pads or system.

My car is now 3 years with 15600 miles for I only use it for town running i.e. Work and home which is near, have another off-road car for out of town excursions.

I replaced my rears at 12,000 miles and computer says my fronts when I reach 17000 miles.

Am I missing something, that some serious wear! Is torque vectoring to blame? I never use Autohold.

I believe it would be useful to learn how many sets of tires you went through in the same time? This will help the rest of us to understand your driving style.

My X4 M40i is on 20" wheels and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. Car has abt 12,000 miles on the clock now. Tires are probably half way done, with luck I'll get 30,000 miles out of them. Computer indicates I will get 40,000 miles out of the rear brakes and 55,000 from the front brakes.

Having a hard time imagining your driving style with only 12,000 miles on the rear brakes. The fact that your rears are going out first tells me that your driving style is quite "restrained." As I understand it, our cars have rear-biased braking under light to moderate braking (to prevent the chassis from "dipping").

AutoHold has no impact on brake wear since it only kicks in when the car is already completely stopped.

Yes quite restrained am mostly in traffic 80% tires at 60% left on original Oem set, always balanced, turned and aligned.

So let me get this right the more restrained I drive the quicker the wear, I thought it was the opposite.

Your assumption is correct, of course. But with light braking habits, the rear pads will wear faster than the front ones. If you brake more aggressively, the fronts and rears will wear the same - but faster. And you will experience faster tire wear as well.

If you have 80% left on original tires and the brakes are gone already, there is something wrong with your car and its brakes.

BTW - BMW does not recommend you turn (rotate?) your tires. And you shouldn't "turn" the rotors, if that is what you were saying.

On the tires, I meant I swap front to back on every alignment and wheel balancing I don't have a staggered set up.

Let me query with my dealer on the brake pads wear issue.

i am beginning to think my short trips in traffic are the cause of the excessive wear....

curious how many miles front and rear are left. Mine said today my fronts are due at 17000 miles grrrrr
