SmartTop

Has any E93 owner fitted or had fitted a SmartTop roof opener ? How do you find it ? Very much considering fitting especialy as they are adding a new function of folding the wing mirrors from the remote as well.

If the are adding that to the CA option. Does that mean that extra equipment is being added as standard for the 2009 model

I will be getting one shortly, mainly as the roof is getting a bit more use now I have read reports on other forums and people seem really happy with them.

I have been in touch and they have added software to tilt mirrors on open/close if you have BMW option fitted , this software is in Beta version as they have only proved on an E90. All other functions operate and are proven 100%. I will be ordering within the next few days. Fitting looks straight forward as I have fitted a similar module to a Z4. Once rear seat area is removed and access to the wiring is gained the rest looks ok if you have some electrical knowledge/skills. As you say the roof is getting more action at present and it would be so nicer just to either tap the remote or the roof switch rather than hold throughout the roof operation.

had one in the garage since last year but never fitted it!!

I did start fitting it once but the car put a warning on the dash (car on ramp! do not drive!!) whilst fitting it. I uninstalled what I had done and BMW fixed it under warranty (they reported a CAN bus failure)

Now, I am an electronics engineer by trade and am pretty good with car wiring (have fitted many big sound systems, hands free car kits, ipod conversions, etc) and have never had an issue before!

The experience has put me off re-trying although it might have just been a coincidence. (The car was going through the phase of just about everything failing at the time)

Will be interested to know anyone elses comments re the fitting.

cheers, Paul

It is a bit of a pain having to move the wires from the connector during installation, surely they could supply a Y cable to attach to both and leave the wiring stock?

have you fitted one Crimson or just downloaded the pdf?

Geting the wires out is VERY fiddly and the pins are VERY fragile!!. One of mine broke and I was convinced that if fitting the kit triggered my CAN bus failure, BMW would have spotted it had been messed with.

They didnt and all has been well since - might fit it again on a bored sunday afternoon

Not fitted one Red, just looked into it in detail, looks easy enough.

If you try to fit yours again I hope you don't have a CAN bus problem, I am suprised that a short on the CAN line would cause a perm fault on the car there are around 8 CAN busses on the car and they must lose messages from time to time.

I will get one but there are a few other things I need to get done first

I've been looking to buy one for an Alfa Romeo Spider, someone on the Alfa forum is organising a group buy. Apparently if you can get 10 people interested and order from the US (even thoughts its a German company) you can get a substantial discount. The Ford CC organised a similar thing recently too.

One thing I would suggest which is not in the fitting instructions is disconnecting the battery, just in case accidental short of disconnected wiring. I have fitted a similar module to a Z4 with no problems and the Z4 roof control and motor are very much the same. I know I have worked on car electrics many a time live but I'm just wary of the electronics on the BMW.

SmartTop fitted

Just finnished fitting the auto roof opener from SmartTop. All functions set up and working great including the folding wing mirror function. The company had not tested this function on a E93 but I requested my module with the beta software, now my roof is one touch both directions from the button and the remote and I can now toggle the folding mirrors in and out by a double press of the lock button on the remote.

Cheaper option than a new car, I wished I had got CA option when I spec'd car but now I have auto roof and other functions for less cost.

Did you enable the function so the top operates whilst driving at low speeds?

Also, did you disconnect the battery when installing it as the instructions don't instruct you to?
